Question 1

How to adjust the Brompton's Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub?

Accepted Answer

Shift to 2nd gear, then check through the axle nut window that the indicator chain rod is flush with the axle end. Adjust with the cable barrel adjuster, then lock the locknut. If gears slip under load, the adjustment is too loose. Find the complete answer on L'Atelier.

Question 2

What tyre pressure for a 16" Brompton?

Accepted Answer

Schwalbe Marathon Racer 35-349 tyres run between 4.0 and 6.5 bar. Small wheels lose pressure quickly: check weekly. Baseline: 5 bar front, 5.5-6 bar rear for a 70-80 kg rider. Too low a pressure risks pinch flats on kerbs. Find the complete answer on L'Atelier.

Question 3

How to maintain the Brompton C Line's folding mechanism?

Accepted Answer

Lightly grease the hinge clamp threads every 3 months and wipe off the excess. Never ride with loose clamp levers. Check for play in the main hinge: persistent play with tight levers requires hinge plate adjustment by an approved workshop. Clean and lubricate the seatpost hook that locks the fold. Find the complete answer on L'Atelier.

Question 4

When to replace the Brompton's chain and sprockets?

Accepted Answer

The 98-link 3/32 chain wears faster than on a full-size bike because it rotates more: check with a gauge from 2000 km, replace at 0.75% wear. On 6-speed versions, replace both sprockets (12/16T) along with the chain if more than 2 chains have run on them. The chain tensioner must pivot freely. Find the complete answer on L'Atelier.

Question 5

What is a used Brompton C Line worth?

Accepted Answer

The Brompton holds its value better than almost any bike: expect 20-30% depreciation after 2-3 years, i.e. 1300-1550 euros for a C Line Explore bought at 1940 euros. Check on a used one: main hinge play, rim wear (rim brakes), Sturmey Archer hub condition, serial number (thefts are common). Find the complete answer on L'Atelier.
