A hydraulic log splitter puts between 4 and 25 tonnes of thrust behind a steel wedge that creeps forward slowly, gives no warning noise, and doesn't stop when it meets something that isn't wood. It is the exact opposite of a chainsaw: a chainsaw is frightening, so people stay wary of it; a splitter is quiet and slow, so people move in close. That is why serious splitter injuries almost always involve hands, and almost always involve experienced users who have picked up a habit.
The other mistake, less dramatic but far more common, is over-buying. Someone processing three cubic metres of stacked logs a year needs neither 20 tonnes, nor a petrol engine, nor a vertical machine. What they need is a machine sized for the wood they actually split, at the right working height — because fatigue is the number one cause of lost attention, and lost attention is what puts a hand in the wrong place.
Tonnage: stop shopping by the big number
Quoted tonnage is a theoretical maximum force. What really decides capacity is the trio of force, log cross-section and species. A knotty 45 cm oak resists far more than a straight ash of the same diameter, and a log split along the grain takes a fraction of the force of one taken across it.

Two criteria matter as much as tonnage, and get far less space on the spec sheet.
- Ram stroke sets the log length the machine will take. A domestic horizontal splitter sits around 50 to 55 cm: if your stove takes 50 cm logs, you have no margin at all and every badly cut log jams. Check the stroke before the tonnage.
- Cycle time decides how your afternoon goes. Reckon on 15 to 20 seconds out and back on a simple domestic machine, 8 to 12 seconds on a two-stage pump that switches automatically to high flow while resistance is low. Over ten cubic metres, that gap is measured in hours.
Vertical or horizontal: your back settles it
Horizontal is the common choice for home users: sat on a stand, you work standing up, and the log stays visible and easy to handle. It runs out of road once logs get heavy, because you have to lift each one onto the beam. Past 25 to 30 kg a piece, it is the repetition that becomes the problem.
A vertical machine takes the log at ground level: you tip it up, chock it, and the wedge comes down onto it. It swallows diameters a horizontal simply cannot take and removes the lifting, but you work bent over and the splitting zone is at foot level. It therefore demands stricter discipline about where your body is.
- Three to five cubic metres a year, 25 to 35 cm logs: horizontal, on a stand at hip height.
- More than eight cubic metres, or large-diameter wood: vertical, with an adjustable table if the model offers one.
- A horizontal machine sat on the ground is the worst of both worlds: you bend down AND you lift. If you have no stand, budget for one — they run £70 to £180.

On single-phase electric, the classic mistake is the extension lead. A 2.5 kW motor at the end of 50 metres of 1.5 mm² cable drops voltage, heats up, and eventually refuses to start under load. For that distance you need 2.5 mm² minimum, fully unwound — a coiled drum sheds heat badly.
On petrol, the rule has no exceptions: never in an enclosed or semi-enclosed space, not even with the garage door ajar. Carbon monoxide has no smell and gives no warning.
On PTO, a splitter is no casual attachment: correct PTO speed, a properly sized shaft with its guards in place, tractor on the parking brake, nobody between tractor and machine. The hitching checks are covered in the article on PTO maintenance.
The two-handed control: what it is actually for
Log splitters sold new come with a two-handed control: you have to hold two separate controls at the same time — usually a lever and a button, or two levers — for the wedge to advance, and letting go of either one stops the wedge or retracts it immediately.
This device does not protect you from the wood. It protects you from yourself. Its only job is to guarantee mechanically that neither of your hands can be in the splitting zone while the wedge is moving. As long as both controls are held, your hands are somewhere else. Full stop.
Hence the rule that admits no exception: you never defeat a two-handed control. Not with a strap, not with a cable tie, not with a wedged offcut, not by holding a lever down with your knee. That modification is always made for the same reason — to free a hand to steady an unstable log — and that is precisely the situation in which a hand ends up between the log and the wedge. The machine is designed to make holding a log during the stroke impossible, because holding a log during the stroke is the thing you must not do.
