Why oil changes are the foundation of everything
An oil change is the most frequent maintenance task on a motorcycle. Skip it, and you accelerate engine wear. Do it right, and your engine runs smoothly for tens of thousands of kilometres.
The problem is that every model has its own intervals, quantities, and filter. An MT-07 has nothing in common with a CB500F.
Intervals: don't rely on a single rule
Manufacturers set different intervals depending on the engine and riding conditions:
- Yamaha MT-07: oil change every 10,000 km (or 1 year)
- Honda CB500F: oil change every 12,000 km (or 1 year)
- Kawasaki Z650: oil change every 6,000 km (or 1 year)
If you ride in the city with frequent stop-and-go, reduce the interval by 20-30%. Oil heats up, cools down, and degrades faster in urban use.
Which oil to choose?
For the majority of modern motorcycles with a wet clutch, you need 10W-40 oil certified JASO MA2. This is the standard that ensures the oil is compatible with the wet clutch — regular car oil would cause clutch slipping.
Quantities by model (with filter replacement):
- Yamaha MT-07: 1.2 L
- Honda CB500F: 3.1 L
- Kawasaki Z650: 2.3 L
These quantities vary depending on whether you replace the filter or not. Always check the sight glass after filling.
The 8-step procedure
- Warm up the engine for 5 minutes — warm oil flows better and carries away deposits
- Kill the engine, place the bike on a centre stand or paddock stand
- Place a drain pan under the crankcase
- Unscrew the drain plug — careful, the oil is hot
- Let it drain completely (5-10 minutes)
- Replace the oil filter — lubricate the new filter's gasket with a bit of fresh oil
- Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer — torque: 20-30 Nm depending on model
- Fill with the specified oil quantity, check the level at the sight glass
Never reuse the drain plug washer. It's a disposable part that costs a few cents and protects you from an oil leak while riding.
The oil filter: change every time?
Most manufacturers recommend changing the filter every other oil change. In practice, many mechanics change it every time — the cost is low (5-15 EUR) and it removes all trapped contaminants.
Check the filter reference in your model's manual. A quality HiFlo or Mann equivalent filter works perfectly.
The classic mistake
Filling without checking the level. Oil takes a few seconds to settle into the crankcase and filter. Fill, wait 2 minutes, check the sight glass, and top up if needed. An engine running low on oil is an engine on borrowed time.
