Motorcycle SAG setup: the complete 5-step method

What is SAG exactly?

SAG is how much your suspension compresses under your weight with the bike stationary. It's the starting point for ALL suspension setup. Without correct SAG, compression and rebound adjustments are meaningless.

The 5-step method

  1. Prepare: tape measure, zip tie or electrical tape, a helper
  2. Measure free extension (L1): rear wheel off the ground, measure axle to a fixed frame point
  3. Measure rider SAG (L2): sit on the bike in full gear, natural position, measure same distance
  4. Calculate: SAG = L1 - L2. Percentage = (L1 - L2) / total travel x 100
  5. Adjust preload: too much SAG → increase preload. Too little → decrease.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring without full gear (3 kg difference matters)
  • Bouncing on the bike instead of settling gently
  • Only measuring one end (do front AND rear)

Once SAG is set, move to preload fine-tuning and damping setup.
