Cargo bike: specific maintenance and inspection points

A cargo bike is not an ordinary bike

A loaded longtail, a box bike with two children, a professional delivery trike — these bikes regularly carry 80 to 150 kg of payload on top of the rider. That radically changes the mechanical stresses compared to a standard 15 kg bike carrying a single person.

Cargo bike maintenance must be more frequent, more rigorous, and focused on specific points that standard bikes don't stress as much.

Frame and welds — structural inspection

A cargo bike frame endures bending, torsion, and fatigue forces far beyond those of a regular bike. Weld points are the most vulnerable areas.

Check monthly:

  • Head tube welds: this is the maximum stress zone on a box bike (the lever arm between the front wheel and head tube is enormous). Look for radial cracks
  • Cargo platform welds: the attachment points of the box or platform endure constant vibrations
  • Kickstand mounting points: the center kickstand often supports the full weight of bike + load when parked. Welds and reinforcements around the mount must be flawless
  • Frame/integrated rack junction (longtail): check mounting bolts and look for cracks around inserts
A cracked frame on a cargo bike is an immediate danger — the bike can fold in half under load. Any visible crack = stop immediately and seek professional repair.

Steering and linkage

Box bikes (Babboe, Urban Arrow, Riese & Muller Load) use an indirect steering system with tie rods or a steering cable. This system requires specific maintenance.

Steering tie rods:

  • Check ball joint play: grab the front wheel and try to pivot it laterally. No play should be perceptible
  • Lubricate ball joints every 500 km (lithium or marine grease)
  • Check ball joint nut torque: 15-20 Nm depending on model

Headset:

  • More stressed than on a normal bike due to weight
  • Check: front brake applied, push the bike back and forth. No clicking should be perceptible
  • Bearing replacement recommended every 5000-8000 km (vs 10000+ on a light bike)

Brakes — accelerated wear

It's simple physics: braking 150 kg at 25 km/h requires far more energy than braking 85 kg. Cargo bike brakes wear 2 to 3 times faster than standard bike brakes.

Hydraulic disc brakes (standard on modern cargos):

  • Pads: check every 500-800 km (vs 1500-2000 on a light bike). Minimum pad material thickness: 0.5 mm
  • Rotors: check thickness every 2000 km. Minimum thickness is engraved on the rotor (typically 1.5 mm for Shimano, 1.8 mm for some models)
  • Hydraulic bleed: every 12 months or if the lever feels spongy
  • Recommended rotor size: 180 mm minimum front, 160-180 mm rear. Some high-end cargos run 203 mm
Tip: if your pads wear out in less than 500 km, switch to sintered (metallic) pads. They last longer under heavy loads and resist heat build-up better, even though they're noisier.

Tire pressure and load

Tire pressure must be adapted to actual load, not the "standard" pressure printed on the sidewall.

General rule:

  • Rear tire (longtail) or front tire (box bike) on the loaded side: maximum pressure marked on sidewall, or very close to it
  • Tire on the unloaded side: normal pressure
  • Schwalbe Pick-Up (the reference cargo tire): designed to support 150 kg/tire, available in 20" and 26"

Checking:

  • Weekly if the bike rides daily
  • After any exceptionally heavy load (moving house, large shopping)
  • Low pressure + heavy load = risk of pinch flat (snake bite) and premature sidewall wear

Drivetrain — chain or belt

Chain (Shimano Nexus/Alfine, derailleurs):

  • Accelerated wear under load. Check with a chain checker every 1000 km (vs 2000-3000 on a standard bike)
  • Lubrication: every 300-500 km or after every rainy ride
  • Chain tension (hub gears): 10-15 mm of sag at the midpoint of the chain run

Gates Carbon Drive belt (increasingly common on cargos):

  • No lubrication needed
  • No significant wear under normal conditions before 15000-30000 km
  • Check tension with the Gates tensiometer (smartphone app or physical tool): 39-46 Hz vibration frequency depending on model
  • Cargo advantage: no grease on clothes, no stretch, minimal maintenance
  • Disadvantage: requires an open frame (no closed triangle) or a specific joining link

Motor and battery — electrical maintenance

Nearly all modern cargo bikes are electrically assisted. The two dominant systems are Bosch and Shimano STEPS.

Bosch (Performance Line CX, Cargo Line):

  • Motor mounting bolt torque: 40 Nm (M8 bolts to frame)
  • Check for motor play every 2000 km
  • Firmware updates via Bosch eBike Flow app
  • Battery: store between 30% and 80% if unused for more than 2 weeks. Ideal storage temperature: 10-20°C

Shimano STEPS (E6100, EP8):

  • Motor mounting torque: 35-40 Nm depending on frame
  • Firmware updatable via E-TUBE PROJECT (USB cable or Bluetooth depending on model)
  • Integrated torque sensor: no recalibration needed in normal use

Battery (general):

  • Never charge a frozen battery (wait until it reaches room temperature)
  • Avoid systematic 100% charging — 80% is enough for daily use
  • Typical lifespan: 500-1000 full cycles (3 to 5 years of daily use)

Spokes and tension — load takes its toll

On a loaded longtail, the rear wheel absorbs considerable lateral and vertical forces. Under-tensioned or loose spokes can break in succession.

  • Check spoke tension every 1000 km with a tensiometer
  • Maximum tolerated wheel true: 1 mm (vs 2 mm on a standard bike)
  • If a spoke breaks, check the tension of all others — one broken spoke often means others are close to their limit

Monthly cargo safety checklist

  • [ ] Frame welds: no visible cracks
  • [ ] Steering: no play, ball joints lubricated
  • [ ] Brakes: pads > 0.5 mm, lever firm
  • [ ] Tires: pressure adapted to load, no cuts
  • [ ] Lights: front + rear functional
  • [ ] Kickstand: stable, no play
  • [ ] Cargo fixtures: straps, mounts, bars — all tight
  • [ ] Spokes: no loose or broken spoke
