Daily checks (before each use)
A chainsaw is a dangerous tool. Daily checks are not optional: they determine your safety and the machine's longevity.
1. General machine condition
- Housing and handles: check for cracks and abnormal play. Anti-vibration handles must be firm.
- Front hand guard (chain brake): manually activate the hand guard. The brake must stop the chain instantly. If the brake is soft or doesn't engage, do not use the machine.
- Inertia sensor: on equipped models, verify the brake triggers when the machine is abruptly tilted forward.
- Exhaust: verify the muffler is in place and not perforated. A damaged exhaust alters carburetor settings and increases burn risk.
2. Chain
- Tension: the chain should pull a few millimeters below the bar without the drive links fully disengaging from the grooves. Too loose, the chain may derail. Too tight, it prematurely wears the bar and sprocket.
- Sharpness: run your finger (with glove) over the top of the cutters. They should catch the skin. If they slide, the chain is dull and needs sharpening.
- Lubrication: verify chain oil flows properly. Run the machine at idle over light-colored cardboard: oil splashes should be visible.
3. Levels
- Fuel (gas models): check the 2-stroke mix level. Never start on an empty tank (risk of air intake and overheating).
- Chain oil: check the level in the dedicated tank. Chain oil is consumed at roughly the same rate as fuel.
Chain sharpening
Regular sharpening is the key to efficient and safe cutting. A dull chain forces the operator to push the machine, increases fuel consumption, and raises kickback risk.
Required tools
- Round file of the diameter matching the chain (4.0 mm, 4.8 mm, or 5.5 mm depending on pitch)
- File guide (file holder) to maintain the correct angle
- Flat file for depth gauges
- Depth gauge tool
Sharpening procedure
- Secure the bar in a vise or use the machine's built-in locking system.
- Identify the shortest cutter: this defines the reference length. All cutters must be filed to the same length.
- Position the file guide on the cutter. The filing angle should be 30 degrees relative to the bar (varies by chain type: 25-35 degrees -- check manufacturer specs).
- File from inside to outside of the cutter in a smooth motion. 2-3 file strokes per cutter typically suffice.
- Sharpen all cutters on one side, then turn the machine and sharpen the other side.
- Check depth gauges: place the gauge tool on the chain. If the depth gauge protrudes, file it flat with the flat file. A depth gauge too low causes vibration and aggressive bite. Too high prevents the chain from cutting.

When to sharpen?
- After every fuel tank (in normal conditions)
- Immediately after hitting the ground, a nail, stone, or metal
- When the chainsaw produces dust instead of chips
- When you need to push the machine to make it cut
Bar maintenance
The bar is often neglected, yet its wear accelerates chain wear and diminishes cut quality.
Regular checks
- Groove: check groove depth with a gauge. If too shallow, drive links aren't guided properly and the chain derails.
- Rails: bar rails must be parallel and equal height. Use a flat file to even out burrs.
- Nose sprocket (sprocket-nose bars): verify the sprocket turns freely. Grease through the lubrication hole with high-temperature grease.
- Straightness: lay the bar on a flat surface. It should show no curvature (sign of overheating or impact).
Flip the bar
At every chain replacement (or every 2-3 sharpenings), flip the bar 180 degrees. This equalizes wear on both rails and doubles bar life.
The 2-stroke mix
Gas chainsaws run on a gasoline/2-stroke oil mixture. The ratio and oil quality are critical for engine longevity.
Mix ratio
Nearly all modern chainsaws (Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo) use a 1:50 ratio (2% oil), which is 20 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline.
Exceptions:
- Some older or budget machines: 1:25 (4% oil)
- Always check the owner's manual for the exact ratio
Preparing the mix
- Use unleaded gasoline (minimum 89 octane RON)
- Do not use E10 or E85 gasoline unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Ethanol attacks carburetor diaphragms and seals
- Use quality 2-stroke oil (Stihl HP Ultra, Husqvarna XP Power, or equivalent)
- Pour oil first into the mixing container, then add gasoline
- Shake vigorously
- The mix keeps for maximum 30 days in a sealed container. Beyond that, the gasoline degrades (gums up carburetor diaphragms)
Pro tip: use mixing containers with built-in measuring caps (Stihl, Husqvarna). They prevent dosing errors and spills.
Air filter
The air filter is the first defense against dust and chips that would destroy the engine. On a chainsaw, it clogs quickly.
Cleaning frequency
- Minimum: at every fuel fill, visually check the filter condition
- Full cleaning: every 10 hours of use in normal conditions, every 5 hours in dusty conditions (pruning, dry wood)
Procedure
- Remove the filter cover (usually a nut or clip)
- Extract the filter
- Foam filter: wash with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, let dry completely, then soak with filter oil
- Felt/nylon filter: tap on a hard surface to dislodge dust, blow with compressed air (from inside to outside). Replace if torn or degraded
- Reinstall the filter and cover
Signs of a clogged filter: machine runs poorly, lacks power, stalls at idle, or produces excessive smoke.
Spark plug
The spark plug is an often-forgotten consumable. Yet its condition directly affects starting and idle.
Inspection
- Remove the plug with an appropriate spark plug wrench
- Electrode color:
- Electrode gap: check with a gauge (typically 0.5 mm). Adjust if needed
- General condition: if the electrode is worn, cracked, or the ceramic damaged, replace

Spark plug torque
Typically 10-15 Nm depending on model. Over-tightening damages the aluminum cylinder thread. Under-tightening causes compression leaks.
Winter storage (long-term storage)
If the chainsaw won't be used for more than 30 days:
- Empty the fuel tank. Run the engine until it stops from fuel starvation. The 2-stroke mix degrades and gums up carburetor diaphragms.
- Remove and check the spark plug. Inject a few drops of 2-stroke oil into the cylinder through the plug hole, then pull the starter 2-3 times to distribute oil on the cylinder walls. Reinstall the plug.
- Clean the air filter and reinstall it dry.
- Remove the chain and bar. Clean the bar groove, oil the chain and bar, store them separately in a dry place.
- Clean the housing and cylinder cooling fins (accumulated dust and sawdust).
- Store the machine in a dry place, protected from frost, with the bar cover in place.
When restarting after storage:
- Reinstall chain and bar with correct tension
- Fill with fresh mix (never old mix)
- Check all safety points (chain brake, inertia sensor)
- Idle for 2-3 minutes before cutting
