Buying a used bike remotely: checks, payment, and delivery

The secondhand bike market is national, even European: the rare model or great deal is often far from home. Buying remotely is doable — but without the ability to see and test everything, you need to be extra methodical. Here's how to secure the transaction.

Compensate for the lack of a test ride

Since you can't inspect the bike, demand maximum information:

• Many clear photos (frame from all angles, drivetrain, brakes, wear) — and a photo on request (a specific detail, proof of ownership with a written note).
• A video call to see the bike in person, spin the wheels, test the brakes.
• The serial number to verify it hasn't been stolen (see recognizing a stolen bike).

Pay securely from a distance

This is the most sensitive point: never wire money blind to a stranger. Prefer a platform with secure payment / escrow that only releases funds upon satisfactory receipt, or a traceable payment method with buyer protection. See paying for a used bike securely.

Shipping

• Bike courier delivery (insured, suitable boxes): the safest option.
• Pickup point / shipper with proper packing (bike partially disassembled, protection).
• Insure the shipment at its value and document its condition at departure (photos) for any disputes.

Upon reception

Immediately check the condition upon receipt, compare against photos and description, and test the drivetrain and brakes before confirming. Any notable discrepancy = activate platform protection.
