Delivering by bike means riding 40 to 80 km per day, often loaded, often in rain, with permanent stop-and-starts. A consumer bike lasts a few months then enters repeat repairs. The right choice depends on three parameters: daily distance, budget, and security.
E-bike: the urban courier standard
The e-bike has become the norm: it handles hills while loaded and limits fatigue over long days. Prioritize:
- Crank motor (central) rather than hub: better efficiency on hills, wear spread more evenly.
- Battery ≥ 500 Wh to last a full day, or a second battery.
- Robust transmission: single-speed easy to maintain, or belt + integrated hub gears (low maintenance, ideal for intensive use).
- Hydraulic disc brakes: essential when loaded and in rain.
Folding: combine bike and transit
The folding bike appeals to couriers taking train/metro between zones. Lower robustness on large volumes, but unbeatable for multimodal transport. Check load capacity (courier weight + full bag).
Cargo / longtail: for high volumes
The longtail (extended cargo) carries large orders or multiple bags. Heavier, more expensive, but pays off for bulky deliveries or parcel delivery.
