Why winter kills motorcycle batteries
The battery is the most neglected component on a motorcycle. In summer, it works without a hitch. But as soon as the bike sits in the garage for weeks without riding, the battery slowly discharges. Cold accelerates the process: a battery loses about 1% of charge per day at 20 degrees C, and even faster below 5 degrees C.
The result: you bring the bike out in spring, turn the key, and nothing happens. The battery is dead.
Know your battery: AGM vs LiFePO4
Two technologies dominate today:
- AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat): the classic technology, reliable, tolerant of imprecise charging. Nominal voltage 12 V, full-charge resting voltage 12.6-12.8 V. Heavier but cheaper (30-80 EUR)
- LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate): 3 to 4 times lighter, charges faster, virtually no self-discharge. Nominal voltage 12.8 V, full-charge resting voltage 13.2-13.4 V. More expensive (80-200 EUR) but longer lifespan
Never charge a LiFePO4 battery with a charger that is not lithium-compatible. The charge profile is different and you risk permanently damaging the cells.
Resting voltage: the key indicator
Measure voltage with the engine off, no consumers active (headlights, alarm, etc.). Use a multimeter set to 20 V DC.
- 12.6 V and above: battery in good condition, ready to start
- 12.4 V: battery half discharged — recharge needed
- 12.0 V and below: deeply discharged — immediate recharge required, risk of sulphation
For LiFePO4, thresholds are higher: 13.0 V = full charge, 12.8 V = half charge.
The cranking test
Resting voltage does not tell the full story. To check actual capacity, measure voltage during cranking (starter button pressed):
- Above 9.5 V during cranking: the battery is healthy
- Below 9.5 V: the battery is weakening, plan a replacement
- Below 8 V: battery at end of life, it will fail soon
