The bike: three budget tiers
Tier 1: €800-1,200 — Start without breaking the bank
- Frame: aluminium (perfectly fine for beginners)
- Groupset: Shimano Claris (8s) or Sora (9s)
- Brakes: mechanical disc or rim brakes
- Wheels: entry-level alloy
- Weight: 9.5-10.5 kg
Recommended models:
- Decathlon Triban RC 520 (~€900): disc brakes, Sora, excellent first bike
- Giant Contend 2 (~€850): good alloy frame, rim brakes
- Cannondale CAAD Optimo 3 (~€1,100): reference alloy frame
This is more than enough for your first rides, sportives and even first races. Don't let anyone tell you that you need €3,000 to start.
Tier 2: €1,500-2,500 — The sweet spot
- Frame: carbon (entry-level) or premium aluminium
- Groupset: Shimano 105 Di2 (12s) or Tiagra (10s)
- Brakes: hydraulic disc
- Wheels: decent alloy
- Weight: 8.5-9.5 kg

The tier where you get the most for your money. The jump to hydraulic discs and 105 Di2 is a genuine quality leap.
Tier 3: €3,000-5,000 — Confirmed passion
- Frame: mid to high-end carbon
- Groupset: Shimano Ultegra Di2 or SRAM Force AXS
- Brakes: hydraulic disc
- Wheels: premium alloy or entry carbon
- Weight: 7.5-8.5 kg
This tier is only justified if you ride 3+ times per week or race. Otherwise, tier 2 is more than enough.
Hidden costs: the bike is just the beginning
Many beginners forget that road bikes rarely come with pedals, and you need a whole kit alongside:
