Why everyone tries ChatGPT for their motorcycle
You're in the garage, torque wrench in hand. You're looking for the front brake caliper torque spec for your motorcycle. Two options: open the 400-page poorly scanned workshop manual, or ask ChatGPT.
ChatGPT answers in 5 seconds. The manual takes 10 minutes of digging. The choice seems obvious.
Except ChatGPT's answer might be wrong. And you won't know until you've stripped a thread or warped a head.
Real limit #1: ChatGPT hallucinates technical numbers
General-purpose language models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — are trained on general text. They have never read your motorcycle's workshop manual. When you ask "what's the front caliper torque for my 1290 Super Adventure", they guess a plausible value based on similar motorcycles they may have seen in training data.
Plausible isn't accurate. 45 Nm on a caliper designed for 30 Nm means a stripped thread. 30 Nm on one that needs 45 Nm means a caliper that loosens on first ride.
I tested ChatGPT on 20 torque specs for common motorcycles (Honda CRF 300L, Yamaha MT-07, KTM 1290, Kawasaki Z650, etc.). Result: 8 wrong answers out of 20. Not approximate. Wrong. With confident delivery.
Real limit #2: it mixes models without telling you
You ask "Honda CRF 300L cylinder head torque". ChatGPT spits out a value. But how, since it never read the CRF 300L manual?
Answer: it pulls from everything Honda single-cylinder trail it has (CRF 250L, CRF 450, XR 600, etc.). It mentally averages, gives you a number. But the CRF 300L has a different timing setup, different studs, different torques.
That's exactly the trap. An answer that sounds coherent (Honda + head + single) but isn't specific to YOUR model. And nobody warns you.
Real limit #3: no verifiable source
When you read a workshop manual, you know where the info comes from: "Honda Service Manual, page 4-12, manufacturer-recommended value". You can cross-check, verify, contest.
When ChatGPT says "the torque is 27 Nm", you have no way to know where that value comes from. It's a fundamental principle of general LLMs: they generate text, they don't cite sources.
Ask for the source and it sometimes invents a reference ("according to Honda manual, page 152") that doesn't exist anywhere. That's called source hallucination. Worst case scenario.
Real limit #4: no knowledge of recent models
ChatGPT has a training cutoff date. A motorcycle released in 2024 or 2025 has very little publicly indexed documentation. For recent models, the general AI knows almost nothing — but it'll answer you anyway.
For older models like Honda Dominator NX 650 RD08 or Yamaha XTZ 660, it's the opposite: little online documentation, so the AI digs into approximate forums and gives you dubious advice.
Real limit #5: the "custom prompt" workaround has limits
Some riders create a custom GPT by uploading their workshop manual. On paper it's better: the AI has access to the doc.
In practice:
- Size limit — a custom GPT accepts max 20 files and 512 MB. A properly scanned manual is 200-400 MB. You can fit only one motorcycle, or fragments.
- Poorly read scanned PDFs — older workshop manuals are image scans. ChatGPT reads the image with its internal OCR, which misses numbers and confuses table columns.
- No updates — when the manufacturer publishes an erratum or revision, you must re-upload manually.
- You pay 23 €/month for ChatGPT Plus, and you end up with an assistant that only has access to YOUR docs, not the entire technical base of other brands' workshop manuals.
What a riding mechanic actually needs
To maintain your motorcycle without risking your engine or your wallet, you need:
- Data specific to YOUR model — not an average across 5 similar motorcycles
- A cited source — the exact page of the workshop manual, verifiable
- Isolation between models — when you ask about your CRF 300L, the AI must NEVER answer with Africa Twin data
- An up-to-date database — recent constructor manuals, technical revues, service bulletins
- No need to upload docs yourself — the database is already built and maintained
