Why the Clutch Wears Out
Your motorcycle's clutch works constantly. Every time you pull away, downshift, or manoeuvre at low speed, the friction plates rub against the steel plates inside the oil bath. This controlled friction transmits engine power to the gearbox. Over time, the friction material thins and the clutch loses effectiveness.
A wet clutch (oil bath) is generally reliable, but engine oil plays a critical role. The wrong oil — too slippery or carrying an "Energy Conserving" rating — or a low oil level accelerates wear and causes premature slipping.
The Three Main Symptoms
- Slipping — The RPM climbs but the bike doesn't accelerate proportionally, especially in 4th or 5th gear under load. This means the friction plates are worn below their minimum thickness. A new friction plate is typically around 3.0–3.2 mm. Below 2.6 mm, you've hit the limit.
- High friction point — You have to release the lever almost completely before the clutch engages. This often means the pressure springs are fatigued and can no longer press the plates together with enough force.
- Stiff lever or irregular travel — Before suspecting internal plates, check the clutch cable (or hydraulic circuit). A frayed cable, poor lubrication, or a tired master cylinder can mimic an internal clutch problem.
Tip: if slipping only appears after an oil change, the oil is likely to blame. Always use JASO MA/MA2 rated oil for wet clutches.
Checking Wear
Before tearing everything apart, measure friction plate thickness with a vernier calliper. Compare each plate against the minimum specification in the workshop manual — usually between 2.5 and 2.8 mm depending on the model.
For steel plates, place them on a flat surface (surface plate or thick glass) and slide a feeler gauge underneath. The maximum allowable warpage is typically 0.10–0.15 mm. A warped plate causes judder and noise.
Also check spring free length with a calliper. Compare to the manufacturer's specification. A spring that has shortened by more than 2 mm loses significant clamping pressure.
