Motorcycle Chain Maintenance: Which Products and Materials to Choose

The chain kit (chain, sprocket, cog) is one of the costliest wear items on a motorcycle — often 150 to 300 € installed. Regular maintenance easily doubles its lifespan. It only requires a few products and a bit of method.

Basic Equipment

  • Chain degreaser (suitable for O-ring seals) + brush (ideally a 3-sided brush).
  • Chain lube (spray) compatible with O-rings/X-rings — this is crucial: an aggressive product destroys the seals and kills the chain.
  • A center stand (or workshop stand) to spin the rear wheel freely. Otherwise, advance the bike in small increments.
  • A cloth, gloves.

The Method

  1. Clean: spray the degreaser, brush the chain while spinning the wheel, wipe.
  2. Let dry a few minutes.
  3. Lube: apply lube to the inside face of the chain (sprocket side), wheel spinning, so centrifugal force doesn't spray it everywhere. Ideally on a warm chain (after riding).
  4. Wipe excess: surplus attracts dust.

Frequency

Every 500 to 1,000 km depending on use, and always after rain or washing. A dry or rusty chain wears and can, at the extreme, break.

Don't Forget Tension and Alignment

Lubing is not enough: regularly check tension (deflection at the tightest point) and wheel alignment. An over-tight or misaligned chain prematurely wears the entire kit.

Our Recommendation

  • The trio: O-ring degreaser + 3-sided brush + O-ring lube.
  • For comfort: a workshop stand, which changes everything.
