Why bike fit matters so much
A poorly fitted bike means lost power, discomfort, and injuries over time. Whether you ride 50 km per week or 500, a position adapted to your body changes everything: more comfort, more power, fewer aches.
Bike fitting isn't just for pros. Every cyclist, from commuters to racers, benefits from correct positioning.
The 5 key measurements
1. Saddle height
This is the vertical distance from the top of the saddle to the bottom bracket axle (center of the BB shell).
Starting formula: inseam × 0.883 (LeMond method) or inseam × 1.09 (Hamley method). Both give close results — use one and fine-tune.
Dynamic check: while pedaling, your knee should have 25-35 degrees of flexion at the bottom of the stroke. Too straight = saddle too high. Too bent = saddle too low.
Symptoms of wrong height:
- Too high: pain behind the knee, rocking hips, perineal discomfort
- Too low: pain in front of the knee, quad burn, power loss
2. Saddle setback
Setback positions the saddle horizontally relative to the bottom bracket. It affects weight distribution and muscle engagement.
Plumb line method: pedal horizontal (3 o'clock), a plumb line from the front knee falls on the pedal axle (KOPS — Knee Over Pedal Spindle). This is a classic starting point, not an absolute rule.
Adjustment:
- More setback: engages hamstrings and glutes more, good for long endurance
- Less setback: engages quads more, good for sprinting and short efforts
3. Reach
Reach is the horizontal distance between the saddle and the handlebars. It determines torso extension and arm angle.
Factors that influence it:
- Stem length (60-130 mm typical)
- Frame reach (geometry)
- Saddle setback
Check: in the hoods position (road) or tops, your elbows should be slightly bent (15-20 degrees). Straight arms = reach too long. Very bent elbows = reach too short.
Symptoms of wrong reach:
- Too long: neck pain, hand numbness, shoulder tension
- Too short: cramped feeling, over-rounded back, twitchy steering
4. Drop (saddle-to-bar drop)
Drop is the height difference between the top of the saddle and the top of the handlebar. More drop means a more aggressive position.
Typical values:

Adjustment: spacers under the stem + stem angle. Remove spacers = more drop = lower position.
Excessive drop for your flexibility = lower back and neck pain. Start with moderate drop and reduce gradually if your flexibility allows.
5. Handlebar width
The handlebars should match your shoulder width (measured between the two acromion bones).
Measurement: have someone measure the distance between the two bony points of your shoulders. The handlebar should be that width, measured center-to-center.
Standard widths: 38, 40, 42, 44 cm (road). Bars too wide = aero loss and imprecise control. Too narrow = restricted breathing and instability.
DIY method: your bike fit in 30 minutes
- Measure your inseam: barefoot, back against a wall, book wedged between your legs firmly. Measure from floor to top of book
- Calculate saddle height: inseam × 0.883
- Set the height: measure from BB axle to saddle top along the seat tube
- Check setback: plumb line from knee, pedal at 3 o'clock
- Evaluate reach: natural position, elbows slightly bent?
- Adjust drop: spacers under stem
- Check bar width: compare to shoulder width
- Ride 30-45 minutes and note how it feels
