Motorcycle air filter: cleaning vs replacement

The air filter: your engine's lungs

The air filter prevents dust, sand, and insects from entering the engine. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which enriches the mixture, increases fuel consumption, and causes power loss. In extreme cases, particles pass through a degraded filter and score the cylinders.

Three filter types, three approaches

Paper filter (OEM standard):

  • The stock filter on most motorcycles
  • Cannot be cleaned — when it's dirty, throw it out and fit a new one
  • Cost: 15-40 EUR depending on model
  • Advantage: fine filtration, no maintenance, just periodic replacement

Foam/cotton filter (K&N, BMC, DNA):

  • Reusable filter, washable and re-oilable
  • Can be cleaned with the dedicated kit: K&N cleaner + K&N oil
  • Procedure: spray cleaner, let sit 10 min, rinse with water (low pressure, from inside out), let dry completely, oil the filter evenly
  • Advantage: better airflow, reusable for 50,000 km+
  • Disadvantage: slightly less fine filtration than paper

Off-road foam filter:

  • Raw foam, requires specific oiling (foam filter oil)
  • Clean with white spirit or dedicated cleaner
  • Maintain after every off-road ride

Symptoms of a dirty filter

  • Increased fuel consumption: the engine compensates for the lack of air by burning more fuel
  • Power loss: especially noticeable at high RPM
  • Difficult starting: mixture too rich when cold
  • Black spark plugs: direct consequence of rich mixture (see our spark plug article)

Replacement intervals

  • OEM paper filter: every 12,000 to 20,000 km depending on conditions
  • K&N / reusable filter: cleaning every 20,000 km (or more often in dusty environments)
In dusty environments (countryside, construction sites), halve the interval. A filter that looks clean visually may already be saturated with micro-particles.

Access varies by model

Access to the filter varies enormously from one model to another. On a naked roadster like the MT-07, you remove the tank (or lift it) and the airbox is accessible in 10 minutes. On a fully faired sportbike, you may need to remove the entire fairing.

Check the workshop manual for your model's exact procedure. Every bike has its quirks.

The common mistake

Riding without a filter "to see if it runs better". Yes, the engine breathes better without a filter — and it also inhales all the road debris directly into the cylinders. A few kilometres are enough to irreversibly score the cylinder walls.
