Himiway review: reliability of its fat bikes (Cruiser, Zebra D5, Escape, A7) in 2026

Himiway made its name with heavy, very long-range fat bikes: the Cruiser, the Zebra, the Cobra. Launched in 2017 and first sold in the United States, the brand has its bikes built in China and sells them in Europe through an official German shop, with versions specific to the European market. In the UK it runs a separate store.

What follows is based on the listings and terms of that European shop (checked on 16 October 2026), on historical French listings and on owners' feedback. No made-up in-house test.

European versus American version: the point that changes everything

This is the first trap with Himiway. The American shop sells bikes stated at 750 W (D5 2.0, Zebra), 1,000 W (Cobra D7) and up to 1,300 W peak (D5 Pro, Cobra Pro). The European shop sells the same names with a motor stated at 250 W and a 25 km/h limit.

Consequence: a Himiway imported from the US, or bought used from someone who imported it, is in France an L1e moped that would need registering, insuring and riding with a helmet, which is impossible in practice without type approval; the same logic applies under UK EAPC rules. Check the motor label and the display settings before any purchase. The rules are covered in our article on the electric fat bike and the law.

The European range and its prices

The crossed-out prices shown alongside (€3,598 for the D5 2.0) don't mean much. In France the Cruiser sold for between €1,599 and €1,799 depending on model year (listing: 250 W, 80 Nm, 840 Wh, 32 kg, suspension fork, mechanical disc brakes, Shimano 7-speed). UK prices differ: check the UK store rather than converting.

Common strength: large-capacity batteries, with LG or Samsung cells depending on the model, and high torque that makes these bikes comfortable on climbs despite their weight.

What's good

  • Robust frames. Stated payload up to 200 kg on the D5 2.0 and A7 Urban, Maxxis tyres on the D5 2.0. Owners describe stable, reassuring bikes.
  • A 2-year warranty on the frame, original parts and battery (with restrictions on the battery), with no registration needed. Twice Engwe's.
  • Range. 720 to 840 Wh, where many competitors stop at 500 Wh.

What doesn't

The weight

38 kg for an A7 Urban, 42 kg for a D5 2.0 or an Escape Pro. These aren't bikes you carry up to a third floor, or load onto a standard towbar rack without checking its per-bike capacity. With a flat battery, you're pedalling a machine of over 40 kg.

Very expensive electrical parts

This is the big weakness against Engwe or Fiido. On the European shop:

PartPrice (Oct. 2026)
Battery Escape Pro, A7 Pro / D5 2.0€599
Battery D3 Cruiser (17.5 Ah)€699
Battery D5 Zebra, Cobra, Big Dog, C5€789
Motor A7 Pro (250 W)€999
Motor D7 Cobra (250 W)€1,499
Frame only€900

A €789 battery on a bike worth €850 used is a bike you won't repair. Look after it from day one: store it between 40 and 60% charge out of season, never in full sun or below zero.

Remote after-sales, sometimes slow

On the Electric Bike Review forum, a long thread lists Himiway problems: batteries that stop charging, displays that won't switch on, controllers replaced under warranty. Owners describe responsive but procedural service, many exchanges before a part is sent, battery stock-outs and, on the US side, a deposit requested for a replacement controller. This feedback mostly concerns the American market; in Europe, all claims go through the German shop's service address, with invoice, photos and videos.

The right of return

The European shop states a 15-day return period. If you buy at a distance as a consumer, the statutory 14-day cancellation right applies anyway (in the UK under the Consumer Contracts Regulations); check the return cost of a box weighing over 50 kg before you order.

Used depreciation: steep

Big Chinese fat bikes lose value fast. Example found: a Himiway Zebra offered at €849 refurbished on Upway, against a stated new price of €2,099, i.e. about 60% less. Two reasons: the price of a replacement battery, which buyers factor in, and the "crossed-out" new price that matches no price anyone actually paid. Our article on selling a Chinese e-bike explains what holds (or sinks) the value.

Should you buy a Himiway?

Yes, if you want a sturdy fat bike for tracks, the beach or carrying loads, you have ground-floor storage or a garage, and you buy the European 250 W version from the official shop.

No, if you have to carry your bike, you dread replacing a €600-800 battery in four years, or someone offers you a "derestricted" American 750 W version. For urban use, our guide to Chinese brands lists lighter models from Engwe, Fiido or ADO.

And if your Himiway breaks down out of warranty, our guide to repairing a Chinese e-bike explains when a generic controller or a battery rebuild can avoid the original part.
