John Deere vs New Holland: comparison for farm operations

Two brands, two visions of farming

John Deere and New Holland are the two giants that dominate tractor fleets in France. Almost every farm has had one or the other (or both). But beyond green and blue, what really sets them apart?

Dealer network

John Deere: about 300 sales points in France. Historically the densest network in grain farming regions. Advantage: parts available same-day in most cases.

New Holland: about 250 dealers in France (own network + multi-brand). Strong presence in western and southwestern France. The network has strengthened with the CNH Industrial merger (which also owns Case IH).

In practice: the real question is "which dealer is within 30 minutes of my farm?" A good dealer makes all the difference during harvest when a cylinder fails.

Parts availability

John Deere: Parts Manager online platform, fast delivery (24h standard, express available). OEM parts often pricier than competition.

New Holland: Parts Online available, CNH logistics network. Some FPT engine parts are shared with Iveco/Case IH — easier to find aftermarket.

Resale value

This is John Deere's knockout argument. A John Deere loses 5-8% per year on average. A New Holland loses 8-12%. On a €100,000 tractor, that's €3,000-4,000 difference PER YEAR.

Concretely:

  • John Deere 6130R (2020, 3,000h) → €65,000-75,000 in 2026
  • New Holland T6.155 (2020, 3,000h) → €50,000-60,000 in 2026

Depreciation is real and documented. It's a factor to include in total cost of ownership.

Farmer feedback

John Deere positives: "Easy to resell", "Network is responsive in season", "The IVT transmission is incredible on 7R+ series"

John Deere negatives: "New price is prohibitive", "Their proprietary diagnostic policy is annoying", "StarFire subscription costs an arm"

New Holland positives: "Better value for money", "SideWinder cab is the best on the market", "Auto Command is as good as IVT"

New Holland negatives: "Harder to resell", "Some FPT parts take long to get", "Network is thinner in some regions"

The verdict

There's no wrong choice between John Deere and New Holland — there's the right choice for your operation, your region and your dealer.
