A bike chain almost never wears out for want of lubricant. It wears out because the lubricant is still there, but loaded with grit, brake dust and metal filings. That mixture does exactly the job of a grinding paste: it works its way in between the pin and the bush of every link, and it eats the metal away with every pedal stroke. That is why a drivetrain slathered in thick oil and never wiped down often lasts less time than a clean one that is lightly lubricated.
Winter makes all of it worse, for one simple reason: the road is permanently wet, so it throws everything up at you, and road salt or de-icer adds a chemical load on top of the abrasive one. Picking a lubricant in October is not about finding the stickiest thing on the shelf so it "holds up in the rain". It is about the compromise between what stays where you put it and what does not collect half the road surface.
What really wears a drivetrain out in winter
Three mechanisms run in parallel, and they do not call for the same answer.
- Internal abrasion. The hard particles that reach the inside of a link stretch the chain by wearing the pins away. That is what a chain checker measures: past 0.5% elongation on an 11 or 12-speed chain, 0.75% on 8 to 10-speed, the chain starts carving into the cassette.
- Corrosion. It mainly attacks a chain left wet and standing. A bike put away damp in an unheated garage rusts more than a bike ridden every day in the rain, because the condensation never moves.
- The lube washing off. A sustained downpour takes most of a light oil away in an hour or two. Running dry after that, the chain works metal on metal and wear climbs very fast.
The received wisdom to bin: "better too much lube than not enough". False the moment there is grit about. What counts is lubricant inside the rollers, and nothing on the outside. Every bit of oil you can see on the side plates is lubricating precisely nothing: all it does is collect dirt.
The three families, and what they are worth in the rain

In practice, on a bike ridden every day in filthy weather, two options genuinely stand up.
- Wet lube, if you accept the cleaning. It stays in place, it protects against corrosion, it forgives being forgotten. The trade-off is that it grabs everything the road throws up, and you have to wipe the chain down after every dirty ride to keep it liveable. On a commuter with no maintenance time built in, it ends up as black paste.
- Wax, if you accept a routine. A waxed chain marks neither your calf, nor your hand, nor the frame, and it cuts abrasion because it attracts nothing. In exchange, it does not forgive: once the wax has gone, it has gone, and there is nothing at all left between the parts. So you re-lube on mileage, not on how it feels.
Dry lube has little to offer in winter. It is made for summer dust and one shower is enough to shift it.
Hot wax, and what it really involves
This is the option that gives the lowest measured wear, and also the most demanding one to get started with. The first waxing needs a perfectly degreased chain: wax will not bond to a film of oil. Reckon on two or three successive baths of solvent or degreaser, a rinse, a full dry, then immersion in the molten wax at around 80 to 90 °C, agitating the chain so the wax gets into the rollers.
After that the routine is simple: when the chain starts to sound dry under the pedals, you take it off at the quick link, drop it back into the melted pot, lift it out, let it set and refit it, cracking the wax loose by hand. Five minutes of actual work, for 150 to 500 km depending on conditions. A pot lasts several seasons.
Three well-known traps: riding straight after a re-wax without having "cracked" the stiffness out of the chain (it skips on the sprockets), going through a ford and carrying on without re-lubing (hot wax and water do not get along), and hoping that an emergency squirt of oil on a waxed chain will be reversible — it all has to be degreased again before the next bath.
How often to re-lube when it rains
One marker beats any calendar: listen to the chain. A properly lubricated drivetrain is silent under load. A dry rasp in a big gear means you are already several dozen kilometres late.
- Wet lube, daily riding in the rain: wipe down after every dirty ride, re-lube every 200 to 300 km.
- Liquid wax: re-lube every 100 to 200 km in the wet, allowing 3 to 4 hours of drying minimum before riding — ideally in the evening for the next morning. Liquid wax applied and used within the hour does not last.
- Hot wax: back in the pot every 150 to 250 km in the wet.
- After a ride through standing water (ford, deep puddle, hose-down), re-lube as a matter of course, whatever the mileage.
