Winter is the worst enemy of a bike's drivetrain. In just a few weeks of rain, mud, and road salt, a chain can wear as much as in an entire season. The good news: a simple, quick routine is all you need to keep everything in great shape. Here's what it is.
Why winter wears so fast
Water washes away the lubricant, mud acts as an abrasive paste, and road salt is corrosive: it attacks the chain, cassette, bolts, and even cables. A drivetrain neglected in winter means chain + cassette replacement by spring.
The routine, after wet rides
- Rinse with clean water (never a high-pressure jet on bearings) to remove salt and mud.
- Dry the chain (a cloth is enough).
- Lubricate with a lubricant suited to wet conditions (wet lube), tougher than summer's dry lubricant. Let it penetrate, then wipe off excess (excess attracts grime).
This 5-minute routine after each salty ride makes all the difference.
The right lubricant
- Wet lube: ideal in winter, resists water, reapply regularly.
- Dry lube: keeps the chain clean but washes off in rain — better for summer.
