Bike brake pads: replace before winter (and choose right)

Why before winter

In the rain, braking distance increases and pads wear out faster (water + mud = abrasive). Starting winter with worn-out pads risks scoring the rotor (expensive repair) during the wet season.

## When to change?

  • Friction material < 1 mm: replace immediately.
  • Braking that vibrates, squeals or lacks bite after cleaning.
  • Metallic noise = the backing plate is touching the rotor → you've waited too long, check the rotor.

Organic vs metallic (sintered) in winter

TypeAdvantageDisadvantage
Organic (resin)Good bite in cold, silentWears fast in rain/mud
Metallic (sintered)Lasts longer in wet conditionsNoisier in cold, wears rotor more
Semi-metallicCompromise

For muddy MTB/gravel or rainy commuting, metallics last much longer. For dry road riding, organic is sufficient.

Fitting without mistakes 1. Remove the wheel, then the pads (clips/pin). 2. Push the pistons back (tool or clean flat key) — without touching the rotor surface. 3. Fit the new pads + spring, refit the pin. 4. Bedding in: 20–30 progressive braking applications from 25 to 5 km/h, without locking up. Essential for bite.

Watch out for contamination Never touch the pad or rotor surface with your fingers (grease). A contaminated pad squeals and won't brake — straight to the bin.
