Protecting your bike from cold and damp: cover, garage, condensation

Enemy number 1: condensation

Counter-intuitive: a motorcycle covered carelessly rusts more than one left in the open air. Why? A waterproof plastic cover traps moisture: condensation forms underneath and stagnates on the metal. The right material breathes.

Choosing a cover

TypeUseVerdict
Plastic coverShort-term emergency❌ Condensation, avoid for long storage
Breathable cover (outdoor)Bike outside✅ Waterproof + breathable, essential
Indoor cover (soft fabric)Garage✅ Dust-proof, breathable

For a bike outside all winter, invest in a waterproof AND breathable outdoor cover, well-fitted and secured (wind will rip it off otherwise).

## Reduce humidity

  • Ventilated space: a garage that breathes is better than a damp sealed box.
  • Cardboard/board under the tyres: isolates from cold ground (source of condensation) and prevents flat-spotting.
  • Humidity absorbers in a small enclosed space.
  • Don't cover an engine that's still hot/damp: let it dry first.

Protect the metal A layer of protectant (dedicated WD-40 type or wax) on bare metal parts (exhaust, fasteners, clean fork sliders) creates a corrosion barrier. Avoid brake discs and tyres.

The winning combo Breathable cover + ventilated space + tyres isolated from ground + battery on trickle charger (see our winterisation guide). That's what makes the difference between a healthy bike in spring and a rust-cleaning session.
