Motorcycle tires in cold weather: pressure, warm-up, grip

Why autumn is treacherous

Two phenomena combine: the rubber stays cold (less grip) and pressure drops mechanically (roughly -0.1 bar for every -10°C). Add wet roads and fallen leaves, and morning grip bears no resemblance to a summer afternoon.

Pressure: check more often Check pressure when cold, in the morning. In autumn, reassess every week: a pressure drop of 0.3 bar degrades handling and accelerates wear. Stick to manufacturer specifications as your reference and don't improvise.

## Warmup: the first kilometres A cold tyre doesn't deliver its nominal grip. During the first 10-15 minutes:

  • Avoid sharp angles and hard braking.
  • Bring the temperature up gradually (light weaving, no aggressive steering lock on open road in cold conditions).
  • Watch out for shaded wet patches and fallen leaves (grip is virtually non-existent).

Choosing suitable rubber Pure sport tyres (soft compound, high warmup temperature) are counterproductive in winter: they never reach temperature in cold road use. For autumn/winter, a touring/sport-touring compound or an all-weather tyre delivers far superior cold grip. We compare trail options in a dedicated article.

The safety reflex Extended braking distance, caution on zebra crossings, paint and drain covers (slippery in rain). Anticipate, brake early and progressively.
