Tractor: prepping the machine for autumn fieldwork

Autumn is peak season

Ploughing, stubble cultivation, crop transport: the tractor works hard and often in wet conditions. A few checks before the season prevents a breakdown mid-job.

1. Hydraulics

It's the heart of field work. Check the level and absence of leaks. A sluggish cold response can signal oil/filters at end of life — see our hydraulic diagnostics article. The lift should hold the load without sagging.

2. Tyres and ballasting

Adapt pressure to load and work type (lower pressure = better grip on loose ground, but respect manufacturer minimums). Check ballasting for ploughing. An under-inflated tyre used for road transport wears and heats up.

3. Filters and cooling

Fields = dust. The air filter clogs quickly (check the warning light). Clean the radiator (straw, dust) to prevent overheating under load.

4. PTO and hitches

Lubricate the PTO driveshaft, check guards (safety first!), and the condition of 3-point hitches before attaching heavy implements.

5. Glow plugs / cold starting

Autumn brings cold mornings. Test glow plug operation: difficult starting signals worn glow plugs.
