The compact tractor: a simple tool if you maintain it
Compact tractors (15-50 hp) have become common among homeowners with large properties, vineyards, market gardens and municipalities. Kubota, Iseki, John Deere and Kioti dominate this segment. Good news: their maintenance is much simpler than a large agricultural tractor.
The universal maintenance table
| Operation | Frequency | Time | Difficulty | Parts cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil change | 100-200h or 1x/year | 30 min | Easy | €25-45 |
| Oil filter | At each oil change | Included | Easy | €8-15 |
| Air filter | 200-400h or 1x/year | 5 min | Easy | €12-25 |
| Fuel filter | 200-400h or 1x/year | 15 min | Easy | €10-20 |
| Coolant | 1,000h or 2 years | 30 min | Medium | €15-25 |
| Greasing | 50h or 1x/month | 20 min | Easy | €5-10 (grease) |
| Hydraulic oil | 500-1,000h or 3 years | 45 min | Medium | €40-80 |
| Hydraulic filter | 500h | 15 min | Easy | €15-30 |

The oil change — the basic operation
Which oil?
Most compact tractors use 10W-30 or 15W-40 CI-4 (diesel). Always check the manual — some recent Kubota models require 10W-30 CK-4 (Low SAPS).
Quantities by brand (common models)
- Kubota B2530: 4.3 liters with filter
- Kubota L3560: 6.2 liters with filter
- Iseki TG5395: 5.5 liters with filter
- John Deere 1025R: 3.2 liters with filter
- John Deere 3038E: 5.7 liters with filter
- Kioti CK3510: 5.0 liters with filter
Procedure
- Run the engine 5 minutes (warm oil = better drainage)
- Shut off, place drain pan under the drain plug
- Unscrew the plug — careful, oil is hot
- Let drain 15-20 minutes
- Change the oil filter (lubricate the new gasket)
- Rethread the plug (new washer recommended, torque 25-35 Nm depending on model)
- Fill to 80%, run 30 seconds, shut off and top up at the dipstick
Grease points — often forgotten
A compact tractor has between 8 and 15 grease points (Zerk fittings). The most critical:
- Steering pivots (2 fittings) — if it squeaks when turning, you're already late
- 3-point hitch joints (4-6 fittings)
- PTO shaft (2 fittings)
- Brake pedal shaft (1-2 fittings)
Use a grease gun with NLGI 2 multi-purpose grease (lithium). 3-4 pumps per fitting each session. Cost: €5-10 per year in grease.
The classic mistake: "I haven't greased since I bought it 3 years ago." Result: seized ball joints, excessive steering play, and parts costing €200-400 to replace.
