The 3 types of hydraulic filters
Your tractor's hydraulic system doesn't have just one filter — it typically has two or three, each with a distinct role:
- Return filter — placed on the return line to the reservoir. It captures most particles generated by component wear (cylinders, valves, hydraulic motors). Typical rating: 10 to 25 microns.
- High-pressure filter — placed after the pump, before the control valve. Protects sensitive components (servo-valves, proportional valves). Typical rating: 3 to 10 microns. Not present on all models.
- Suction filter (strainer) — in the reservoir, on the pump suction line. Coarse (50-100 microns), its role is to prevent large debris from entering the pump.
When to change them?
Intervals vary by manufacturer, but here are common benchmarks:
- Return filter: every 500 hours (or annually, whichever comes first)
- High-pressure filter: every 1000 hours (or when replacing a pump/valve)
- Suction strainer: clean every 1000 hours, replace every 2000 hours
If you open the circuit (replacing a cylinder or pump), always change the return filter — even if it only has 100 hours on it.
Contamination: the invisible enemy
Clean hydraulic oil looks like clean oil. But the particles that destroy a pump are 5 to 15 microns — invisible to the naked eye. That's why we use the ISO 4406 standard to measure cleanliness.
A tractor hydraulic system should typically be maintained at ISO 18/16/13 cleanliness or better. Beyond that, component wear accelerates exponentially.
Signs of a clogged filter:
- Loss of hydraulic power (slow loader, stiff steering)
- Oil foaming or overheating (> 80°C)
- Filter clog warning light (if your tractor has one)
- Cavitation noise from the pump (whistling, rumbling)
