Chainsaw maintenance: chain sharpening, guide bar and carburetor adjustment

A sharp chain is 80% of the job

The chain is the most critical element of your chainsaw. A sharp chain cuts almost by itself — the weight of the machine is enough. A dull chain forces you to push, which strains the engine, heats the guide bar, and increases the risk of kickback.

Signs it needs sharpening:

  • You have to push hard to get the chain to advance through the wood
  • The sawdust is fine like powder (instead of chips)
  • The cut drifts sideways
  • The engine strains or overheats

Sharpening: the right values

Sharpening is done with a round file, on each cutter (cutting tooth), respecting three parameters:

Cutting angle: 30° for most standard chains (3/8", .325"). Some semi-chisel chains use 25°, and carving chains 10°. The angle is marked on the chain packaging or in the manual.

Depth gauge setting: the gap between the top of the cutter and the depth gauge should be 0.65 mm (0.025") for standard chains. This is the most forgotten parameter — yet it controls chip thickness. Too deep = risk of jamming and kickback. Not enough = poor cutting.

Use a depth gauge tool (a few euros) to check. File the depth gauge with a flat file when it's too high.

File diameter: must match the chain pitch. 3/8" = 5.2 mm file. .325" = 4.8 mm file. 3/8" LP (low profile) = 4.0 mm file.

The method: 1. Lock the chain with the chain brake 2. File each cutter with 2-3 strokes, same pressure, same angle 3. Use the same number of strokes on each tooth — asymmetry makes the cut pull to one side 4. Check the depth gauge every 3-4 sharpenings

The guide bar: cleaning and maintenance

The guide bar wears too. The groove deepens, the nose becomes oval (if the nose sprocket is worn), and burrs form on the rails.

Regular maintenance:

  • Clean the guide bar groove with a thin tool (groove cleaner or old flat screwdriver)
  • Check that the oil hole isn't blocked
  • Flip the guide bar regularly (every 2-3 chains) to equalize wear
  • File burrs off the rail edges with a flat file

When to replace: when the groove is too wide (chain has lateral play), when rails are uneven, or when the bar nose is oval.

Air filter: the most forgotten maintenance

A chainsaw air filter clogs very quickly — fine sawdust accumulates in just a few hours of use.

Frequency: clean the filter at every fuel refill (yes, that often). Replace at the start of each season or as soon as it's torn/deformed.

Method: tap it against your hand to remove the bulk, then blow with compressed air from inside to outside. Do NOT wash with water (unless it's a washable nylon filter).

Carburetor adjustment: H, L and T

A chainsaw carburetor typically has 3 adjustment screws:

  • L (Low) — air/fuel mixture at idle and low RPM. Affects throttle response.
  • H (High) — mixture at full throttle. The most critical: too lean = overheating and seizure. Too rich = lack of power and fouling.
  • T (or LA, or I) — idle speed adjustment.
Warning: on recent models (EPA/EU Stage V compliant), H and L screws are often limited or factory-locked. Don't force them. If adjustment is needed, use the manufacturer's special tool.

Baseline setting: H and L screws closed then opened one turn. Fine-tune by ear — a stable full-throttle RPM, without "four-stroking" (too rich) or screaming (too lean).
