Rusty bike: prevent and treat before it spreads

Where rust attacks first

Damp autumn accelerates corrosion. The weak points:

  • The chain (most exposed, rusts overnight if left wet)
  • Steel fasteners (stem, bottle cage mounts, dropouts)
  • Spokes and spoke nipples
  • Contact points where paint is chipped

Treating a rusty chain Surface rust (light): degreaser + brush, then relube. If the links are stiff or rust is deep, the chain is done for — replace it (and measure wear while you're at it). A rusty chain wears out the cassette.

Treating fasteners and small spots 1. Scrub with fine steel wool (000) or a brass brush. 2. Penetrating oil/rust inhibitor on the area. 3. Wipe down, then protect: grease on the threads, wax or varnish on frame spots.

On a steel frame rust spot (chipped paint): light sand, degrease, touch-up paint + varnish. Never leave bare steel exposed.

The steel vs aluminium/carbon case Aluminium and carbon don't "rust" like steel, but aluminium corrodes (white oxidation) and steel fasteners rust on all bikes. So even an aluminium/carbon bike has vulnerable spots.
