eBike pre-winter service: drivetrain, brakes, battery

E-bikes wear faster — especially in winter

The motor multiplies torque: your transmission wears 1.5 to 2× faster than on a manual bike, and winter (water, salt, mud) accelerates everything. An autumn service prevents breakdowns at the worst time.

1. Transmission (priority)

Measure chain wear with a chain checker. On e-bikes, replace it at 0.5% wear (instead of 0.75% on manual bikes) to preserve the more expensive cassette. Lubricate with wet lube for winter. See our guide "when to change your chain".

2. Brakes

E-bike weight (+ motor + battery) wears pads faster. Check thickness before winter (wet braking more frequent). Bleed if the lever feels spongy — Shimano procedure in our guide.

3. Battery and contacts

  • Clean the battery contacts (dry cloth, never water) — corrosion causes intermittent losses.
  • Check the seals and waterproofing of the housing.
  • In winter, store the battery somewhere warm and charge at room temperature (cold reduces range — see our dedicated article).

4. Washing

Like any bike: never use high pressure on the motor, battery, or bearings. Soft water, brush, dry thoroughly. The mid-drive motor is sealed (IP54-65) but not indestructible.
