Which eBike to choose in 2026: the complete buying guide (motor, battery, budget)

Buying an e-bike in 2026: where to start

The electric bike market has exploded, and with it the number of pitfalls: overhyped motors, undersized batteries, brands without after-sales support. The right approach isn't to find "the best e-bike" in absolute terms, but the right e-bike for your needs. This guide gives you the order of decisions to make.

Step 1: define your usage

Before the motor or brand, answer these questions:

UsageBike typePriority
City trips < 15 kmUrban / folding e-bikeComfort, moderate range, lock
Commute 15-40 kmTrekking / longtail e-bikeRange, reliability, comfort
Leisure trailsGravel / trekking e-bikeVersatility
MTB / mountainAll-mountain e-MTBTorque, suspension, robustness
Cargo / childrenElectric cargo bikeTorque, brakes, frame

The bike type already determines 80% of the motor and battery choice.

Step 2: the motor

The mid-drive (central) motor is now the standard for any serious use. The three majors in 2026: Bosch, Shimano and newcomer Avinox (DJI). We compare them in detail in Avinox vs Bosch vs Shimano: 2026 motor comparison.

Quick reference points:

CriterionWhat matters
Torque (Nm)40-65 Nm enough in the city; 75-100+ Nm for MTB/cargo
PositionMid-drive (central) > hub motor for balance and drivetrain longevity
After-sales supportBosch = densest network in Europe; check for a workshop near you
Noise / smoothnessTry it: the feel of assistance varies greatly

For bikes assembled by non-major brands, the choice is often Bafang — we compare models in Bafang M510 vs M620 Ultra.

Step 3: the battery (the real crux)

This is what determines your real range AND the cost of future replacement (€400-900). Don't trust the advertised range: it's measured in eco mode, flat terrain, good weather.

Capacity (Wh) = range. Real reference points in mixed rolling terrain:

CapacityReal range (trail/tour mode)
400 Wh40-55 km
500 Wh50-70 km
625 Wh65-90 km
750-800 Wh80-115 km

The detail of calculations and variables (weight, mode, temperature, terrain) is in Bosch battery range: real calculations.

Lifespan: a lithium battery lasts ~1000 cycles at 80% capacity. Its number one enemy is storage at full charge in the cold. Well stored, it lasts for years — method in e-bike battery storage and winterisation.

Step 4: realistic budget

BudgetWhat you get
< €1,500Entry-level, hub motor, 400 Wh battery, limited after-sales support — be careful
€2,000-3,500Good value: mid-drive Bosch/Shimano, 500-625 Wh, reputable brand
€3,500-5,500Premium: 750-800 Wh, quality suspension, powerful brakes
> €5,500Top-tier e-MTB, equipped cargo bike

True cost includes maintenance (drivetrain wears 1.5-2× faster) and future battery replacement.

Step 5: 2026 grants

Depending on your region and income, purchase grants exist (ecological bonus, local schemes). Current details are in electric bike grant 2026: purchase aid. They can reduce the price by several hundred euros — check BEFORE buying.

Step 6: 25 or 45 km/h?

Almost all e-bikes are limited to 25 km/h (bike category). Speed Pedelecs (45 km/h) are another category: registration, insurance, homologated helmet, plate. Regulations are detailed in e-bike 25 vs 45 km/h: regulations. For 99% of uses, 25 km/h is the right choice.

Comparisons by usage

Checklist before buying

  1. Usage defined → bike type
  2. Matching motor (torque based on usage, after-sales support verified)
  3. Sized battery (Wh based on real distance)
  4. Realistic budget (purchase + maintenance + future battery)
  5. Grants verified before purchase
  6. Real trial (assistance feel can't be bought from a catalogue)

Unsure between two specific models? Give them to the mechanic AI with your usage and terrain: it compares real specs, expected range and regional after-sales support to help you decide.
