Bosch Smart System: can you migrate from the legacy system?

The context: 2 parallel Bosch ecosystems

Since 2022, Bosch has maintained 2 platforms in parallel:

  • Bosch Performance Line CX "Classic" (BDU374Y and earlier, up to 2021): Intuvia/Purion/Nyon 1st gen ecosystem
  • Bosch Smart System (BDU384Y, BDU331Y, BDU337Y since 2022): Kiox/SmartphoneHub/Flow App + ConnectModule ecosystem

The two are NOT cross-compatible. Let's understand why and what that changes.

Why switch?

Smart System new features:

  • OTA firmware updates (free, automatic)
  • Complete Flow app (stats, navigation, custom modes)
  • eBike Lock: engine lockdown if theft attempt detected
  • AutoLock: automatic lockdown when you move away
  • Compatibility with PowerTube 800 Wh
  • Bosch 4th gen ABS (if frame compatible)
  • Bluetooth + 4G via ConnectModule
  • Predictive Range Control with topographic map

What you lose staying on Classic:

  • No major firmware updates since 2023 (Bosch has halted firmware support)
  • No PowerTube 800 (limited to 625 max)
  • No eBike Lock / AutoLock
  • No Flow App
  • No Bosch ABS

Can you migrate a Bosch CX 2020 to Smart System?

Short answer: NO, not while keeping the original motor.

The BDU374Y motor (Classic CX 2020) does not accept Smart System firmware. You must replace the motor with a BDU384Y (Smart System).

Full migration cost

ComponentCost
BDU384Y motor (Bosch official)£675–£850
Smart System cockpit wiring£70–£110
Kiox 300 display£200
Smart System compatible battery (PowerTube 625 mini)£540–£675
Installation labour£180–£270
Total£1665–£2105

For a bike costing £3150 new, it's rarely worth it.

Smarter alternatives

### Option 1 — Keep Classic, optimise If your CX 2020 works, you can:

  • Update the firmware one last time (latest is from June 2023)
  • Swap the battery for a PowerTube 625 if you still have a 500
  • Keep the Intuvia or switch to a 1st gen Kiox (Classic compatible)

Cost: £540–£675 (battery alone), gain in range ~50 km.

### Option 2 — Keep the frame, buy a new motor (already pricey) If your frame is a Bosch eBike format (CenterMount, etc.) with PowerTube 625/750 battery mounting compatible, you can upgrade only:

  • BDU384Y motor
  • Smart System display
  • Wiring

But: you could also find yourself in a situation where your frame doesn't accept Smart System (battery housing specific to Classic). Check with the bike manufacturer.

Option 3 — Sell + buy a Smart System e-bike More pragmatic: a new Cube Reaction Hybrid Pro 2024 (Smart System CX) at £3150. You sell your used CX 2020 for £1350–£1800. Difference: £1350–£1800 for a fully up-to-date bike 5 years on.

How to tell if your bike is Smart System or Classic?

Method 1 — Visual check

  • Intuvia, Purion (premium gen), Nyon (gen 1 non-tactile) display = Classic
  • Kiox 300, Kiox 500, Nyon 2 (tactile), SmartphoneHub display = Smart System

Method 2 — Motor code Engraved under the motor cover: BDU3xxYY

  • BDU374Y = CX Classic
  • BDU384Y = CX Smart System
  • BDU331Y = Cargo Line Smart System
  • BDU337Y = Performance Line Smart System

Method 3 — App If Bosch eBike Flow app detects your bike via Bluetooth, it's Smart System. If it detects nothing and you have to use the older Bosch eBike Connect app, it's Classic.

Smart System in practice — known issues

1. ConnectModule subscription The 4G/GSM module requires a subscription (Bosch ConnectModule Premium) at £25/year. Without it, you lose eBike Lock, AutoLock, GPS tracking. The motor runs but without the "connected features".

2. Updates not always stable A few Smart System firmwares have caused bugs (phantom E300, E503 errors). Bosch fixes them quickly but it's a period of instability.

3. Smartphone dependency If you use the SmartphoneHub or SmartphoneGrip (economical, no dedicated screen), your phone becomes the cockpit. Dead phone battery = no display (the motor still runs).
