Bosch Performance Line CX 2024 Smart System (BDU384Y): what really changed

2024 context: Bosch catches up with the competition

With the arrival of Avinox (105 Nm), Specialized 2.2 (90 Nm) and Shimano EP801 (85 Nm), the 2020 Bosch CX (85 Nm) was starting to feel dated. The BDU384Y revision announced in late 2023 and fitted to 2024 models addresses this.

The mandatory Smart System requirement

This is THE structural change: you cannot buy a 2024 Bosch CX without Smart System. No more compatibility with older Intuvia, Purion, Nyon (1st gen) displays. You must upgrade to:

  • Kiox 300 (mid-range display) — £220
  • Kiox 500 (premium colour display) — £320
  • SmartphoneGrip (smartphone as display via Flow app) — £90
  • System Controller (compact control without display, smartphone handles display) — £50

If you're replacing a 2020 CX with a 2024 on an existing bike, your old display won't work — complete cockpit rewiring needed, expect around £400 in parts plus labour.

Improved eMTB mode — the "Race" algorithm

The eMTB mode reads torque sensor 1000×/sec and adapts the boost. In 2024, new "Race" algorithm that:

  • Launches more aggressively as soon as torque sensor exceeds 35 N·m
  • Peaks faster at 100 Nm (no delay)
  • Smoother cutoff at 25 km/h (no jerking)

On the trail: around 20% gain in short acceleration (measured on steep sections 50 m, 12% gradient). The gap with Specialized 2.2 remains minimal, but Bosch's automatic mode is noticeably more intelligent than the competition.

PowerTube 800 compatibility

Important news: the 2024 CX accepts the PowerTube 800 Wh. Same external dimensions as the 750 Wh (identical frame integration), improved 21700 50E cells. Real-world range (Trail mode):

  • PowerTube 500 → 60 km
  • PowerTube 625 → 75 km
  • PowerTube 750 → 90 km
  • PowerTube 800 → 100 km

New connectivity features

With mandatory Smart System comes a complete software ecosystem:

  • Flow App (iOS/Android): stats, OTA updates, custom modes
  • Integrated ConnectModule: eBike Lock (engine lock via smartphone), AutoLock, theft detection
  • Bosch ABS compatibility: if your frame is ABS-ready, the Bosch ABS module (4th gen) communicates natively
  • Range Control: real-time range prediction with topographic map

Quick comparison vs 2026 competition

Specialized 2.290 Nm1.9 kg565 Wtriple
Bosch CX 2024100 Nm2.8 kg750 Wtriple

Bosch remains 2nd in torque/power behind Avinox, but well ahead of Shimano. Bosch's real differentiator remains the service network (>3500 approved workshops in EU).

Should you upgrade from a 2020 CX to a 2024 CX?

Yes if: you're rebuilding the entire cockpit anyway (broken, upgraded bike), you want PowerTube 800, you can find a manufacturer credit.

No if: your 2020 CX works fine, you don't need the extra 15 Nm, you don't want to pay £400 in Smart System rewiring for a 4-year-old bike.

Got a question about your Bosch CX model and compatibility? The mechanic AI identifies your year (BDU374Y vs 384Y) from the motor serial number and tells you what does or doesn't upgrade.
