Why maintain a central motor

Unlike a standard bike, a central motor e-bike has mechanical + electronic components under constant voltage. Poor maintenance results in:

  • Progressive loss of torque
  • Overheating and motor failure
  • Premature wear of internal reduction gear
  • Water ingress (poorly managed high-pressure washing)

Here's the realistic schedule by brand.

Bafang M510 / M620 — Schedule

### Every 500 km or monthly Do it yourself :

  • Clean the motor housing with lukewarm water + mild soap (never direct high pressure on the housing)

Avinox M1 (DJI) — Schedule

DJI Avinox is recent (launched 2024) and long-term real-world experience is lacking. Schedule announced by DJI:

### Every 1000 km

  • External cleaning — IPX6 rated so tolerates slightly more water than others
  • Crank arm tightness verification (28 Nm specific to Avinox)
  • Firmware update via DJI app (OTA, free)

Mistakes to avoid (all brands)

1. Direct high-pressure washing All motors are IP54-IPX6 maximum. A pressure washer held 30 cm from the housing forces water past the seals. Use soft water and a sponge, never pressure.

2. Storing battery fully charged A battery left 6 months at 100% loses 10-15% of capacity irreversibly. Store at ~50-60%.

3. Storing battery completely flat Below 5% charge, the BMS can enter "deep sleep" and the battery becomes unrecoverable. Keep >20% in storage.

4. Charging at very low temperature Charging below 0°C damages lithium cells (lithium plating). Remove the battery from your bike, warm indoors for 2 hours, then charge.

5. Pedalling without battery on certain motors The BBSHD has an internal freewheel system that can wear with prolonged no-load pedalling (dead battery over 30 km). Better to push or disengage.
