Big Adventure Bikes (1000+ cc)
BMW R1300GS — The Undisputed King
The GS has been the segment benchmark for over 40 years, and the R1300GS 2024+ pushes limits further. The 1300 boxer engine is wonderfully flexible with its 149 Nm of torque. Electronics are the most comprehensive on the market: semi-active suspension, cornering ABS, bi-directional quickshifter, optional adaptive radar.
Strengths: absolute versatility, long-distance comfort, dense dealer network, exceptional resale value. Weaknesses: high price (and it climbs fast with options), weight in serious off-road, BMW service costs.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure S — The Sportiest
The KTM 1290 is Austria's answer to the GS. 9 kg lighter, 15 hp more powerful, it focuses on sportiness. The LC8 twin is a characterful engine with a raw soundtrack. WP semi-active electronics match BMW's.
Strengths: best power-to-weight ratio, sharp road handling, record range (23 L). Weaknesses: average passenger comfort, thinner service network than BMW, polarizing ergonomics.
Honda Africa Twin — The Reliable One
The Africa Twin is the sensible choice. The 1084 cc parallel twin is bulletproof, the optional DCT (dual clutch transmission) is a real joy in town and on trails. The 24.8 L tank provides exceptional range.
Strengths: Honda reliability, huge tank, unique DCT gearbox, reasonable price. Weaknesses: power deficit vs the other two, slightly austere finish, dated dashboard.
