Electric Motorcycles 2026: Comparison, Range and Price

Electric motorcycles are progressing every year, but are they viable for daily use in 2026? After riding several models and talking to owners, here's an honest assessment of the market.

Zero SR/F — The Most Complete

The Zero SR/F is the benchmark electric motorcycle for serious road use. The ZF75-10 motor delivers 190 Nm of torque instantly — acceleration is brutal. The 14.4 kWh battery (expandable to 17.3 with Power Tank) provides 140-180 km real range in mixed use.

DC fast charging is a game-changer: 95% in 1 hour on a fast charger. Without fast charging, expect 4-5 hours on a reinforced home outlet.

Strengths: performance, DC fast charging, comprehensive mobile app, OTA updates. Weaknesses: high price, limited highway range (~100 km at 130 km/h), no transmission so no traditional engine braking.

Energica Experia — The Tourer

The Energica Experia is the only electric motorcycle designed for touring. With its 22.5 kWh battery and DC fast charging, it offers the most credible range: 200-250 km in mixed use. The touring position, tall screen and available panniers make it a genuine tourer.

Strengths: best range on the market, standard DC fast charging, comfortable touring position. Weaknesses: weight (260 kg), high price (26,290 EUR), limited service network.

LiveWire S2 Del Mar — The Urban Fun Machine

The LiveWire Del Mar is the most accessible "real" electric motorcycle. The 263 Nm (!) of torque from the first revolution is mind-blowing. In the city, it's an absolutely joyful toy. The 100-130 km range suffices for daily urban commuting.

Strengths: insane torque, great design, aggressive pricing for the category, lightness (197 kg). Weaknesses: no DC fast charging, limited range outside the city, no proprietary charging network.

Running Costs: Really Cheaper?

ItemPetrol Bike (600 cc)Electric Bike (Zero SR/F)
"Fuel" / 10,000 km750 EUR (5 L/100, 1.50 EUR/L)150 EUR (electricity)
Annual oil change80 EUR0 EUR
Chain kit (amortized)80 EUR0 EUR (belt 50,000+ km)
Brake pads (amortized)60 EUR30 EUR (regeneration)
Insurance600 EUR400 EUR (eco bonus)
Annual total1,570 EUR580 EUR

Annual savings are roughly 1,000 EUR. But with a 10,000-15,000 EUR purchase premium over an equivalent petrol bike, payback takes 10-15 years. It's a conviction choice, not yet an economic one.

My Verdict

Electric motorcycles are viable for daily use in 2026 for urban and peri-urban riding (< 100 km/day). For touring or highway, only the Zero SR/F with Power Tank and the Energica Experia offer credible range — provided you plan charging stops.

The real barriers remain price and fast-charging infrastructure. When DC chargers are as common as petrol stations, the shift will be inevitable. We're not there yet, but it's moving fast.

In the meantime, if you already ride electric, L'Atelier can help with technical questions: torque specs (yes, there are some), brake maintenance, battery diagnostics. Our database covers electric motorcycles too.
