Why carbon doesn't forgive
Carbon fiber doesn't bend like aluminum — it shatters. Over-torquing a stem bolt on a carbon steerer creates invisible micro-cracks that can fail catastrophically under braking.
The exact values
| Component | Torque (Nm) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Stem bolts on carbon steerer | 5-6 Nm | Always use carbon assembly paste |
| Carbon handlebar clamp bolts | 4-5 Nm | Tighten in star pattern |
| Top cap bolt | 1-2 Nm | Just to remove play |
| Carbon steerer expander | 5-8 Nm | Check manufacturer spec |
Carbon assembly paste: mandatory
Assembly paste (Finish Line Fiber Grip, Park Tool SAC-2) increases friction by 30-40%, meaning you achieve the same grip with less torque. Without it, you'll instinctively over-tighten.
