Gravel is road riding that hits the dirt
A gravel bike combines road components (disc brakes, rear derailleur, integrated shifters) with off-road use. The problem: these precise, fine-tolerance components take on mud, sand, dust, and water spray that road components were never designed to handle.
Result: without proper maintenance, a gravel bike wears 2 to 3 times faster than a road bike rolling exclusively on tarmac.
The post-ride routine (15 minutes)
1. Immediate rinse (2 min)
Don't let mud dry — it becomes abrasive once dry and much harder to remove.
- Rinse the bike with a gentle stream (garden hose, no pressure washer)
- Focus under the bottom bracket, behind the fork, between the chainstays and seatstays
- Rinse the cassette and chainrings to dislodge sand
If you don't have access to water right away, at least dry-brush the large chunks of mud with a soft brush. It's better than letting it dry.
2. Drivetrain (5 min)
The gravel drivetrain takes the most abuse:
- Chain: wipe it with a dry cloth after rinsing. If the ride was muddy, use a quick degreaser (spray + cloth). Re-lube with a lubricant suited to conditions:
- Cassette: visually check for grass strands or debris stuck between sprockets
- Derailleur pulleys: the number one grime trap. A quick brush after every ride
3. Tire inspection (3 min)
Gravel tires (typically 38-50 mm) are more exposed to cuts and foreign objects:
- Cuts: inspect sidewalls and tread. A cut exposing the casing (you can see the threads) needs a boot patch or tire replacement
- Foreign objects: remove thorns, flint, and splinters with tweezers. If running tubeless, any puncture not sealed by the sealant is a risk of overnight pressure loss
- Sealant level: every 2-3 months, add 30-60 ml of sealant (Stan's, Orange Seal, Effetto Mariposa). Sealant dries out over time, especially in summer
- Pressure: check pressure before every ride. Tubeless naturally loses 0.1-0.2 bar per day
4. Disc brakes (2 min)
Gravel riding throws fine dust and sand onto discs and pads:
- Noise: if brakes squeal after the ride, it's often contamination. Clean discs with isopropyl alcohol or specific brake cleaner
- Pad wear: visually check thickness. On a gravel bike, pads last 1,500 to 3,000 km (vs 5,000+ km on road). Sand dramatically accelerates wear
- Contamination: if you rode through oily puddles (farm roads), pads can be contaminated. Symptom: spongy braking with no bite. Sand the pads (120-grit sandpaper) and clean discs with alcohol
On gravel, organic (resin) pads wear fast but brake well when clean. Metallic (sintered) pads resist abrasion better but are noisier. If you ride in mud often, switch to sintered.
5. Cable housing (3 min)
Derailleur and brake housings take the brunt of spray:
- Inspect housing entries: if mud has penetrated, shifting becomes slow and imprecise. Disconnect the housing from the frame and blow with compressed air, or inject a drop of thin lube (not WD-40, too volatile — use Finish Line or cable lube)
- Internal routing: gravel bikes with internal cables are better protected but harder to service. Check the bottom bracket area (mud accumulation zone)
- Replacement: gravel housings last 3,000 to 5,000 km (vs 8,000+ km on road). If shifting becomes mushy or slow, it's often a worn housing before it's a broken cable
6. Quick checkpoint
In 1 minute, check:
- Wheel tightness: thru-axles torqued (12-15 Nm per manufacturer)
- Headset play: front brake squeezed, push the bike — no clunk
- Seatpost: no play, correct height (marker pen on the post = quick reference)
- Accessory bolts: bottle cage, fender, rack — gravel vibrations loosen everything
