The three types of bike racks
Rear rack
The most common. It attaches to the seatstays and rear dropouts. You see it on 90% of city and touring bikes.
- Capacity: 18 to 25 kg depending on model
- Usage: side panniers, top bag, child seat
- Mounting: threaded eyelets (M5) on seatstays + rear dropouts. If your frame lacks eyelets, aluminum P-clamps can attach to the tubes

Front rack
Less common but essential for load balance during touring. Two sub-types exist:
- High rack (platform type): mounts on the fork, above the wheel. 10-15 kg capacity. Ideal for a basket or light bag
- Lowrider: panniers are mounted on each side of the front wheel, at mid-height. Lower center of gravity = better stability. 10-15 kg capacity per side

- Surly Front Rack: wide platform, compatible with all forks with eyelets
Seatpost rack
For bikes without eyelets (road bikes, some MTBs). Clamps to the seatpost.
- Limited capacity: 5 to 10 kg maximum
- Vibration: the lever arm on the seatpost transmits vibrations, the rack can "dance"
- Usage: backup solution, light bikepacking, errands
Mounting points: checking compatibility
Before buying, check these points on your frame:
- Threaded eyelets (braze-ons): look for M5 threaded holes on the seatstays (2 pairs) and rear dropouts. A touring or gravel frame will always have them. A race frame rarely will
- Tire clearance: the rack must not rub against the tire. Check for at least 10 mm clearance between the mounted tire and the rack structure
- Disc brakes: some racks are incompatible with disc brake calipers (space constraints). Look for "disc brake compatible" models
- Carbon fork: NEVER attach a rack with P-clamps on a carbon fork. Carbon cannot handle localized clamping forces — risk of failure
