Why the saddle is the most personal part of your bike
The saddle is the main contact point between you and your bike. An unsuitable saddle can ruin your rides within a few kilometers. But comfort doesn't depend on price or padding — it depends on compatibility with YOUR anatomy and the quality of adjustment.
Step 1: measure your sit bones
Sit bones (ischial tuberosities) are the two bony protrusions you sit on. Their spacing determines the saddle width you need.
DIY method:
- Place a piece of corrugated cardboard on a hard surface (not a cushion)
- Sit on it for 30 seconds in your cycling position (leaning forward)
- Identify the two deepest impressions
- Measure the center-to-center distance

Saddle width = sit bone spacing + 20-30 mm. Brands like Specialized (Body Geometry) or Bontrager (BioDynamics) offer in-store measurement systems.
Step 2: choose the shape
Saddle shape depends on your riding position and pelvic flexibility.
Flat saddle: for riders with good flexibility and an aggressive position (low torso). Allows you to move freely on the saddle. Examples: Fizik Arione, Selle Italia SLR.
Curved saddle: for riders with average flexibility and a moderate position. The central curve "locks" your position. Examples: Specialized Power, PRO Stealth.
Cutout saddle: reduces pressure on the perineum. Recommended if you experience numbness. Examples: Specialized Power Expert with MIMIC, Fizik Argo.
Short-nose saddle: a recent trend. Reduces nose length by 20-40 mm. Allows freer pelvic rotation and reduces perineal pressure. Ideal for very aggressive positions or triathlon.
Step 3: height adjustment
Saddle height is the most important adjustment for both comfort AND performance.
Heel method:
- Sit on the saddle with your heels on the pedals
- Pedal backward: your leg should be perfectly straight at the bottom of the stroke (6 o'clock)
- When you switch to the ball of your foot on the pedal, you'll have the correct flex (about 25-30 degrees at the knee)
109% method:
- Measure your inseam (barefoot, standing, a book wedged between your legs)
- Multiply by 1.09 (or 0.883 depending on the formula)
- The result = distance from the top of the saddle to the BB axle
These methods give a good starting point. Adjust by 2-3 mm based on feel. A saddle too high = pain behind the knee and rocking hips. Too low = pain in front of the knee and power loss.
