Berlin is a city of bikes at heart, but without Dutch formality: here, repair has a strong do-it-yourself culture and neighborhood workshops (Kiez). The supply is abundant and often more affordable than in other capitals.
Berlin's cycling and motorbike scene
On the bike side, you'll find everything: small independent shops on every corner, DIY repair workshops (Fahrradwerkstatt where you tinker on your own bike with help and tools), chains and e-bike specialists. The culture of utilitarian bikes and secondhand bikes is very strong. On the motorbike side, the scene is smaller than in Paris or Madrid, with well-established custom and classic specialists and dealerships.
How to choose
- Neighborhood shop vs. chain: for routine maintenance, a good independent in the Kiez is often the best value for money.
- DIY repair: if you're handy, collaborative workshops save you labor costs — very Berlin.
- E-bike specialist: with the electric boom, check that the shop handles your motor type.
Price context
Berlin remains more affordable than Paris or London on labor. The secondhand and DIY ecosystem drives costs down, especially for a basic bike. An e-bike or motorbike, though, needs a real specialist.
