VanMoof is the Dutch brand that set out to reinvent the urban bike. The S5 is their flagship: minimalist design, impressive onboard technology, and a promise to simplify bike commuting. But VanMoof's story also includes reliability problems and a narrowly avoided bankruptcy.

The design: undeniably successful

The S5 is objectively one of the best-looking e-bikes on the market. Everything is integrated: battery in the frame, invisible cables, LED lighting in the top tube, matrix display on the head tube. The aesthetic is clean, almost futuristic.

This is THE pain point. VanMoof experienced serious issues: frequent electronic failures, overwhelmed customer service, bankruptcy in 2023 (rescued by Lavoie), and sometimes unavailable spare parts.

Since the acquisition, things have improved, but the reputation remains tarnished. If you buy a VanMoof, verify warranty conditions and proximity to an authorised repair centre.

The verdict
