Gravel has moved past the trend phase. In 2026, it's a full category with highly specialized bikes. There are two main families:
- Road-biased gravel: aggressive geometry, moderate tire clearance (40 mm), pavement performance
- Off-road-biased gravel: relaxed geometry, wide tire clearance (50 mm+), optional front suspension

Selection criteria
Tire clearance
This is THE criterion that distinguishes a road-biased gravel from an adventure gravel. The wider the clearance, the larger the tires for comfort and off-road grip:
- 38-40 mm: enough for white roads and smooth gravel
- 42-45 mm: the sweet spot for most riding
- 47-50 mm: rough terrain, mud, bikepacking
Drivetrain
In 2026, two options dominate:
- Shimano GRX Di2: electronic, 12-speed, reliable, ideal for gravel (long cage, shark tooth)
- SRAM Force/Rival AXS: wireless, mullet compatible (road front + MTB rear), very versatile
- 1x vs 2x: 1x (single chainring) dominates in pure gravel. 2x still makes sense if you ride lots of road.
