Why motorcycle oil is different from car oil
The fundamental difference between motorcycle oil and car oil comes down to one word: the clutch. On most motorcycles, the clutch sits in the engine oil (wet clutch). The oil must therefore perform three functions simultaneously:
- Lubricate the engine (pistons, crankshaft, camshaft)
- Lubricate the gearbox (gears, forks, synchros)
- Enable clutch operation (controlled friction between plates)
Standard car oil contains friction modifiers (FM) that reduce internal friction to save fuel. These additives are catastrophic for a wet clutch: they cause the clutch plates to slip, leading to power transmission loss, a clutch that "slips" under acceleration, and premature lining wear.
Absolute rule: never put car oil in a motorcycle with a wet clutch.
The JASO standard
JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization) created specific standards for motorcycle oils:
JASO MA
The oil is certified compatible with wet clutches. It contains no friction modifiers that would cause clutch slip. This is the minimum requirement for any motorcycle with a wet clutch.
JASO MA friction indices:
- Dynamic Friction Index (DFI): 1.45-2.00
- Static Friction Index (SFI): 1.15-2.50
- Stop Time Index (STI): 1.55-2.50
JASO MA2
Enhanced version of MA, with higher friction indices in the upper range. Recommended for sport bikes and modern high-specific-output engines where clutch demands are high.
JASO MA2 friction indices:
- DFI: 1.70-2.00
- SFI: 1.60-2.50
- STI: 1.80-2.50
JASO MB
Low-friction oil, intended for scooters and motorcycles with dry clutches (Ducati, some BMW models). Never use on a wet clutch.
Viscosity grades
Viscosity is expressed per SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards as XW-YY, where X is cold viscosity and YY is hot viscosity.
10W-40: the motorcycle standard
This is the most commonly prescribed grade by motorcycle manufacturers. It offers a good compromise between:
- Sufficient cold-start fluidity (10W)
- Adequate high-temperature protection (40)
Recommended for: the majority of motorcycles in normal use, temperate climate. This is the default grade if the manual doesn't specify otherwise.
10W-30: for smaller engines
Less viscous when hot, this grade suits small-displacement bikes and motorcycles used primarily in the city. Some Japanese manufacturers recommend it for their 125-300cc models.
Warning: do not use 10W-30 if the manual specifies 10W-40. High-temperature protection may be insufficient.
5W-40: for cold weather
The "5W" guarantees better cold-start fluidity (below 0 degrees C). Useful for riders who ride year-round in continental climates.
15W-50: for air-cooled twins
V-twins (Ducati, Harley-Davidson, some Moto Guzzi) and large air-cooled singles reach high oil temperatures. The 15W-50 grade offers better protection in these extreme conditions.
Mineral, semi-synthetic, or synthetic?
Mineral oil
Derived directly from crude oil refining. The cheapest oil, suitable for older or lightly stressed engines.
Advantages:
- Low price
- Compatible with old seals (doesn't swell/shrink them)
- Sufficient for low specific-output engines
Disadvantages:
- Degrades faster at high temperatures
- Shorter oil change intervals (3,000 to 5,000 km)
- Less stable over time
Semi-synthetic oil
Blend of mineral and synthetic base (typically 20-30% synthetic). A good price/performance compromise.
Recommended for: mid-displacement motorcycles (300-600cc) in everyday use.
Fully synthetic oil
Manufactured by chemical synthesis (polyalphaolefins or esters). Superior performance on all criteria.
Advantages:
- Excellent thermal stability
- Better cold and hot protection
- Longer oil change intervals (6,000 to 12,000 km depending on manufacturer)
- Better protection for parts under extreme stress
Disadvantages:
- Price 2-3 times higher than mineral
- May cause old seals to leak (especially on pre-1990 motorcycles)
Recommended for: sport bikes, high-performance engines, track use, extreme conditions (temperature, load).
Oil change intervals
Intervals vary considerably by manufacturer and model:

Important: these intervals are indicative. Always refer to the owner's manual for the exact model and generation. Severe use conditions (city riding, high heat, sport riding) justify shortening the interval by 30-50%.
The oil filter
At every oil change, replace the oil filter. The filter captures metallic particles, combustion residues, and oil degradation products. A saturated filter lets contaminants through and reduces oil flow.
Practical tip: apply a film of fresh oil to the filter's O-ring before installation. Hand-tighten + 3/4 turn (or to the manufacturer's specified torque). Never over-tighten: the seal crushes and the filter becomes impossible to remove at the next change.
Practical oil change tips
- Drain when engine is warm (after 5-10 min of running). Warm oil is more fluid and carries more contaminants.
- Replace the drain plug gasket at every change (copper or aluminum washer). It's a 0.50 EUR consumable that prevents leaks.
- Check drain plug torque. Typically 20-30 Nm depending on model. Over-tightening damages the (aluminum) sump thread.
- Measure the oil quantity poured. Fill in stages and check with the sight glass/dipstick. Overfilling causes crankcase overpressure and can damage seals.
- Run the engine for 30 seconds after filling, stop, wait 2 minutes, then check the level. The oil needs to fill the filter and galleries before the level stabilizes.
- Record the date and mileage of the oil change. In a workshop, update the client file.
