Power tool batteries: platforms, compatibility and storage best practices

A battery is a long-term commitment

When you choose a battery-powered tool brand, you're not just choosing a tool — you're choosing a platform. Batteries are only compatible within the same platform. Switching from Makita to DeWalt means rebuying all batteries.

That's why platform choice is the most important decision in professional power tools.

The main platforms

Makita 18V LXT — The most extensive platform on the market: over 300 compatible tools. Batteries range from 2.0 Ah to 6.0 Ah. The 18Vx2 (36V) system lets you use two 18V batteries for high-power tools (chainsaw, blower). The new 40V MAX XGT range is separate and incompatible with LXT.

DeWalt 20V MAX / FlexVolt — The "20V" marketing is misleading (it's 18V nominal). Over 250 tools. The FlexVolt system (54V/60V MAX) uses batteries that automatically switch between 20V and 60V based on the tool. FlexVolt batteries are backward-compatible with 20V MAX tools.

Milwaukee M18 — Over 200 tools. The M18 FUEL system uses high-performance brushless motors. HIGH OUTPUT batteries (6.0 to 12.0 Ah) deliver more peak power. The MX FUEL (72V) system is separate for heavy-duty tools.

Stihl AP (36V) — The pro platform for landscape maintenance. Batteries from 2.0 Ah (AP 100) to 7.2 Ah (AP 500 S). The AR system (backpack battery) is compatible with the same tools. Narrower range but very focused: chainsaw, brushcutter, hedge trimmer, blower.

Husqvarna BLi (36V) — Direct Stihl competitor. Batteries from 2.0 Ah (BLi 10) to 9.4 Ah (BLi 300). Backpack batteries BLi 520X and BLi 940X are compatible with the same tools. Excellent runtime on pro models.

Compatibility: the rules

• Same brand, same platform = compatible. A 2015 Makita 18V LXT battery works in a 2025 Makita 18V LXT tool.
• Same brand, different platform = incompatible. A Makita 18V LXT battery does NOT fit a 40V MAX XGT tool (except with an adapter, when available).
• Different brands = incompatible. Third-party adapters exist but are not recommended (overheating risks, voided warranty, no electronic tool/battery communication).

The trap: some manufacturers have multiple platforms. DeWalt: 12V MAX, 20V MAX, FlexVolt, POWERSTACK. Makita: 12V MAX CXT, 18V LXT, 40V MAX XGT. Always check the platform logo on BOTH the tool AND the battery.

Storage: best practices

Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive. Poor storage cuts their lifespan in half.

Storage charge level: between 40% and 80%. Never store a battery fully charged (100%) or fully depleted (0%). Ideal is 50-60%.

Temperature: between 10°C and 25°C. Avoid freezing (< 0°C damages cells) and excessive heat (> 40°C accelerates aging). Don't leave batteries in a vehicle in direct sunlight.

Duration: even without use, a battery slowly self-discharges (~1-2% per month). If storing for more than 3 months, check and recharge to 50% regularly.

Lifespan and end of life

A pro lithium-ion battery lasts 500 to 1,000 charge/discharge cycles. In daily pro use, that's 2 to 4 years. For personal use, 5 to 8 years.

Recycling: lithium-ion batteries must be recycled. Return them to a store or recycling center. NEVER throw them in household waste.
