New bike chain slipping or grinding: worn cassette is the culprit

You've changed your chain, and instead of improving, things got worse: the chain skips or slips under effort, especially standing out of the saddle or on the most-used sprockets. Frustrating — but logical. The problem isn't the new chain: it's the worn cassette rejecting it. Here's why.
The misunderstanding
We think "new chain = new drivetrain". In reality, a new chain mounted on a worn cassette doesn't mesh correctly: it "skips" over the hooked teeth. Adjusting the derailleur or replacing the chain again won't fix it.
Why it happens
A chain stretches as it wears, and this stretched chain wears the sprockets to match its shape (hooked teeth, like a hook). As long as you keep the old chain, the worn ensemble "stays together". But a new chain, at the right pitch, no longer finds purchase on deformed teeth: it climbs and skips under load, especially on the most-used sprockets (usually the middle ones).
The "3 chains per cassette" rule
If you replace the chain in time (before it's too stretched — see when to replace your chain), you can typically run 2 to 3 chains on the same cassette. If you wait until the chain is very worn, it destroys the cassette, and you'll have to replace everything together.
The diagnosis
The new chain skips mostly on the most-used sprockets and under load → worn cassette.
It shifts smoothly on rarely-used sprockets (often the largest) → confirms targeted wear.
Measure your chain wear regularly and replace it on time: that's what spares the cassette (much more expensive) and prevents this scenario. Correct torque when reassembling prevents other noises — see bike torque chart.
