A "crack" with every pedal stroke makes any ride unbearable. And most cyclists first blame the bottom bracket… which is rarely the culprit. The noise travels through the frame and deceives the ear. The key to diagnosis: note WHEN the noise appears. This timing points to the part.
Step 1: when exactly?
- Every pedal stroke, under load → drivetrain (pedals, cleats, cranks, bottom bracket, chainring).
- Only when standing up → seat tube, handlebar/stem junction, or wheel tightness.
- During braking or over bumps → headset play, axle tightness, pads/brake blocks.
- Irregularly → a loose spoke, loose accessory, or hose rubbing the frame.
Step 2: false leads on the bottom bracket
A creak blamed on the bottom bracket often comes from elsewhere: pedals to tighten (with a bit of grease on the thread), worn shoe cleats, or especially the crank/axle interface drying out. Before suspecting the bracket itself, disassemble, clean, and grease these contacts. If the noise persists, check your bracket standard — a poorly installed press-fit bracket typically creaks. Step 3: torque spec, the silent cause
Many creaks come simply from a bolt not at the right torque: chainring, bottle cage, seat collar, wheel. Undertightening lets parts micro-move (so creak); overtightening damages them. The bike torque spec table gives values by component — essential on a carbon frame.
