"Can I install an 11-42 cassette on my bike?" "A Shimano XT 11-speed derailleur with a 105 shifter?" These questions come up every day in the workshop, and the answer is rarely yes or no. The compatibility of a drivetrain depends on four parameters that must all align — not just one.
This guide gives you the method to decide before buying a part, rather than discovering the problem once the package is open.
The 4 parameters that decide
A drivetrain works when these four points agree:
- The number of speeds (9, 10, 11, 12v). It sets the spacing between sprockets, so the indexing pitch of the shifter. An 11v shifter only properly controls an 11v cassette.
- The derailleur pull ratio: how much the derailleur moves for each click of the shifter. This is where Shimano and SRAM diverge the most.
- Derailleur capacity and cage: the largest tooth difference it can absorb, and the largest sprocket it can reach.
- The cassette body (freehub): HG, Micro Spline (Shimano 12v MTB), XD/XDR (SRAM). A cassette only fits on its intended body.
If even one of these points doesn't match, the drivetrain won't index properly, will skip, or won't install at all.
Mixing brands: the pull ratio question
The belief "Shimano and SRAM never mix" is false, but you need to know where. Shifter and derailleur must speak the same pull ratio language: a Shimano road shifter 11v and a Shimano road derailleur 11v, yes; a Shimano shifter with a SRAM derailleur of the same speed count, usually no — the pull ratios differ and indexing drifts sprocket to sprocket.
On the other hand, cassettes and chains mix much more freely: an 11v chain from any brand works on an 11v cassette, as long as you respect the speed count. The sprocket doesn't "know" what brand chain passes through it.
The large sprocket trap
Installing a wide-range cassette (11-42, 11-51) requires two things: a derailleur whose cage physically reaches the large sprocket, and enough capacity to take up chain slack. A road derailleur with a short cage facing an 11-42 means either the chain binds or the pulley hits the sprockets. The derailleur spec sheet always lists the "maximum usable sprocket" — that's the number to check first.
