Why chain wear matters so much
Your chain does not wear out on its own. As it stretches, it accelerates the wear on your cassette and chainrings. Those parts cost 3 to 10 times more than a chain. Replacing your chain at the right time protects the rest of your drivetrain.
A new chain costs between 15 and 40 euros. An XT cassette costs 80 euros. A chainring costs 40 to 60 euros. The maths is simple: changing your chain early saves you big.
How to measure wear
Chain wear is measured as a percentage of elongation. A new chain has a pitch of 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) between each link. As it wears, this pitch increases.

This is a simple two-sided indicator:
- One side 0.5% — if it drops between the links, your chain is starting to wear
- One side 0.75% — if it drops, your chain must be replaced immediately
You can also use a ruler or callipers:
- Measure 12 full links (pin to pin)
- Theoretical distance: 304.8 mm (12 x 25.4 mm)
- At 0.5%: 306.3 mm
- At 0.75%: 307.1 mm
- At 1.0%: 307.8 mm
Critical thresholds

The rule: if you replace your chain at 0.5%, you can run 2 to 3 chains on the same cassette. If you wait until 1%, you replace everything at once.

These values vary enormously depending on maintenance, lubrication and weather conditions. A well-lubricated chain that is cleaned regularly lasts much longer.
