Motorcycle starts great when cold but difficult when hot: the causes

It's a baffling symptom: the motorcycle starts perfectly when cold, but after a few minutes of warm engine shutdown, it struggles, sputters, or refuses to restart. The reflex "it's the battery" is almost always wrong — a weak battery would cause problems when cold too. Here are the real causes, in order.
What the symptom tells you
Difficult only when hot points to a parameter that changes with temperature: a sensor that skews the mixture when hot, fuel that vaporizes, or a component that drifts in heat. So we look for what degrades as temperature rises.
Cause #1 — The engine temperature sensor (fuel injection)
On a fuel injection motorcycle, the temperature sensor (CTS/ECT) tells the engine computer how much to enrich the mixture. If faulty, it sends a false value when hot → incorrect mixture → difficult starting. It's the most common cause on FI bikes, and a simple sensor check rules it out.
Cause #2 — Vapor lock (carburetor and fuel injection)
In extreme heat, gasoline can vaporize in the fuel lines or tank: vapor bubbles disrupt fuel delivery. Typical after a warm engine shutdown in summer. Letting it cool for a few minutes or turning off the key often helps — that's a clue.
Cause #3 — Fuel pump weakening when hot
On a fuel injection motorcycle, a tired pump delivers insufficient pressure when it heats up, causing labored hot starts.
Cause #4 — Ignition drift
Coil or sensor that, as it heats up, deliver a weaker or retarded spark. Rarer, but possible on an older motorcycle.
Cause #5 — Starter heating up
Mechanical case: a worn-out starter cranks poorly once hot (the starter motor struggles). Distinguish this from carburetion causes.
The procedure
Start with spark plugs and checking the temperature sensor (FI), verify the level and condition of coolant (an overheating engine makes everything worse), then move up to fuel pump and ignition. On a carburetor motorcycle, consider vapor lock and the idle circuit — similar to the case described in our hot stalling diagnostic.

Difficult only when hot on a fuel injection bike, the number-one suspect is the engine temperature sensor (CTS/ECT): if it reads wrong when hot, the computer enriches poorly and starting becomes labored. Have it checked first. Also consider vapor lock (fuel vaporizing in extreme heat) and, if it persists, a fuel pump weakening as it heats.
