Bike pump: choose between floor pump, mini-pump and CO2

Riding at the right pressure is comfort, efficiency and fewer flats (see the pressure table). But you need the right equipment — one for home, one for the road. Here's how to equip yourself.

First: your valve type

• Presta (fine, with a small nut to unscrew): on most modern road bikes and mountain bikes.
• Schrader (large, like a car valve): on many e-bikes and city bikes.

Most pumps handle both, but check it before you buy. An adapter can help.

The floor pump: at home

Essential. It inflates quickly, without effort, and most importantly it has a pressure gauge to target the right pressure. Look at:

• the maximum pressure (thin road tires go high; mountain bikes need large volume at low pressure),
• stability and nozzle quality.

On the road: mini-pump or CO2?

• Mini-pump: reliable, reusable indefinitely, but hand-pumping takes time and effort. The safe choice.
• CO2 cartridge: inflates a tire in seconds, tiny in your pocket — but single use and you need to carry cartridges in advance. Ideal as a backup, not alone.

The smart combo: a CO2 cartridge to fix quickly during a ride, and a mini-pump as a backup just in case.

For tubeless

Reflating a tubeless after installation requires high flow: a standard floor pump often works, otherwise a tubeless pump with reservoir helps pop the tire. If air is lost, see the tubeless troubleshooting checklist.
