GPS or Wheel Sensor?
A GPS bike computer calculates speed and distance via satellite: nothing to install on the wheel, and it records the route of your rides. It's the standard today, unless you need extreme precision indoors (where a speed sensor remains useful — see the indoor trainer).
Navigation: The Real Differentiator
Entry-level: records the ride, displays speed/distance/elevation gain, to be analyzed later on the app.
Mid / high-end: built-in maps and turn-by-turn navigation, so you can explore without getting lost. That's where the budget goes up.
If you always ride the same routes, navigation is a luxury. If you explore, it becomes essential.
Sensors (ANT+ / Bluetooth)
A good bike computer connects to external sensors:
Speed / cadence: useful indoors and for pedaling analysis.
